Jamshedpur, Sept. 18: Lessons in English would never be the same again at DAV Public School, Bistupur. The school has been authorised by Cambridge University to train children so that their standard of English improves and they do not find it difficult to get admission to schools abroad.
Come October and the school will introduce the Cambridge Young Learners’ English course, the British system of education curriculum, the only one of its kind in the city. The course aims at improving English learning, listening, writing and comprehension skills according to the British pattern of education.
Meant for students aged between seven and 12, the course comprises three key levels of assessment — starters, movers and fliers. The three tests promotes international English language testing skills, builds a bridge for young learners to reach the “way-stage” level from the beginner’s course.
The examination, evaluation and certification will be conducted by the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES). Textbooks and training material to students opting for the course will be given free of cost. However, charges for coaching, general administration and infrastructure have to be borne by the students opting for the course.
According to principal of the school S.P. Sharma, the British Council faculty from Calcutta is training 14 teachers to counsel the students appearing for the test. “It will be an optional programme, which will conducted beyond school hours. Students of other schools can also opt for the course. We plan to accommodate 100 students in the first batch and students have to bear the expenses for appearing in the test,” Sharma said.
The school authorities said the British Council representatives have already inspected the school and expressed their desire to make it a resource centre for British Council examination. The teachers also attended a workshop organised at the school by the visiting faculty of the British Council, Calcutta, recently.
