Prizes galore in JRD marathon

Jamshedpur, July 29: Santosh Patel of Uttar Pradesh and Pompa Chandra of West Bengal were the winners of the fifth JRD Tata Invitational Half-marathon (21 km) in the men's and women's categories, respectively, held on Friday.

The marathon, and other races, was held to mark the 101st birth anniversary of the country?s premier aviator.

R.B. Subba of Sikkim and last year's winner Lalshram Aruna Devi of Manipur finished as runners-up in the men?s and women?s category respectively.

Patel walked home with Rs 75,000 while Chandra pocketed Rs 30,000. Subba received Rs 35,000 and Aruna Rs 17,500. Cash prizes were also given to the participants who finished within the top 10 race slots.

The prizes were handed over by Shuvra Mukherjee, wife of Tata Steel deputy managing director T. Mukherjee.

Shankar Kumar Singh of the Athletics Training Centre triumphed in the 10-km road race for cadets (boys) of Tata Steel training centres, while Anand Kujur of the athletics academy finished second.

Pratap Avineet from Jamshedpur Public School and Rableen from Motilal Nehru Public School were the respective winners in the boys and girls categories.

The runners-up were Rajneesh Kumar of SDSM School for Excellence and Laxmi Soren of Tube Baridih School.

Himanshu Anand edged out Ashish Anmol Ekka in the 5-km race for the National Institute of Technology students.
