Ranchi, June 23: In an effort to broker peace between army personnel and villagers of Gari and Hotwar, deputy commissioner of Ranchi Pradeep Kumar will visit the villages on June 27.

A dispute cropped up over the use of the common roads passing through the cantonment area. The decision of his visit was taken today after a meeting of the villagers with Kumar at his office.

Kumar later told The Telegraph that a team of officials from the district administration visited the village and submitted their report on the problem and that he would act after going through it.

?A team of administrative officials visited the village on Wednesday and submitted its report. I am going through the report. After studying the findings I will personally visit the villages to find out an amicable solution,? he added.

Earlier, residents of Gari and Hotwar villages has conveyed their problem to the deputy commissioner. The villagers said more than 10,000 villages have been suffering due to the establishment of the cantonment on ancestral land for the last 25 years. They further informed that there is no road connecting the village to the city.

A villager in the meeting alleged that army personnel had injured at least four tribals when they were passing through the cantonment area. ?Some army personnel fractured the leg of Jagna Toppo and hand of Bimal Tirkey. They had also broken the waist of a village guest and assaulted a woman with a stick when they were coming to Hotwar using the path that passes through the cantonment area,? he said.

Another villager informed that while army men had closed two of the three short cut roads connecting Gari and Hotwar village with the national highway , they have started restraining villagers to use the only existing short-cut path for the last few days.

?Army men are not allowing villagers to use the path that passes through cantonment area. They are not ready to understand the problem and assault anyone who tries to convey them ,? the villager added.

A woman from Hotwar village said due to non-compromising attitude of the army personnel it took her 90 minutes to reach her destination, which can be otherwise covered in 10-15 minutes.

Villagers on the other hand, have threatened to block the national highway for indefinite period in case their problems are not solved. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has extended its support to the villagers on the issue.
