NCC cadets rally against dowry

n The women members of the National Cadets Corps of LBSM College took out a rally to protest against dowry.

Cadets carrying banners and placards visited various places in the city and spread awareness on the need for a concerted effort to abolish the dowry system. S.N.L. Das, principal of the college, flagged-off the rally.

In his address, the principal lauded the efforts of the cadets and expressed sadness that grooms still accept bribe in today’s society. “It is the duty of the present generation to fight against the dowry system. They should stop accepting dowry and if their parents insist they should protest. Educated youngsters should unite and launch a campaign against dowry,” said Das.

The cadets, too, were excited. “Our college has recently formed a separate NCC unit for women. Participating in various programmes is proving to be a learning experience. We hope to organise more such campaigns,” said a cadet.

Tribute to Premchand

n The Graduate School College for Woman paid tribute to Munshi Premchand on his 125th birth anniversary.

A literary talk was organised on the life and works of Premchand in which scholars on Hindi litretaure delivered lectures.

Former professor of ABM College Raghuvansh Mishra was the chief guest at the function. He said the works of Premchand give a picture clear picture of rural India. He said students should spend more time reading novels by Premchand to get the flavour of true India.

Shukla Mohanty, principal of Graduate School College for Women, said the talk has been organised to pay tribute to the writer and generate awareness among students about his works.

Freshers’ welcome

n It was an event to remember for the new batch of intermediate students of Jamshedpur Women’s College.

A colourful function was organised on the college campus to welcome the freshers. The senior batch presented a cultural programme.

Dineshanad Goswami, member of Jharkhand Academic Council, was the chief guest. Addressing the students. Goswami stressed on the importance of education. He said the students should utilise their time studying and participating in competitions to hone their skills.

“I am honoured to have received such a warm welcome. The faculty members and our seniors are extremely nice,” said Reena Gupta, a first-year intermediate student of the college.

Stress management

n A seminar on stress management was organised at Karim City College. Psychiatrists from the city discussed the reasons for increasing stress in young people and came up with ways to handle it.

Zaki Akhtar of the phsychology department said the level of stress varies from person to person. He said stress has harmful effects on the human body. According to WHO, 60 to 70 per cent of diseases are caused due to stress, he added.

Discussing the ways to combat stress, Akhtar said meditation was an ideal way to combat stress and lead a healthy life. He also stressed on a healthy diet. Md Zakaria, principal of the college, said that more such seminars will be organised in the college to give experts from different fields to share their views on health issues.

Independence Day

n The Ranchi Women’s College celebrated 58th Independence Day on its premise by honouring nine teaching and non-teaching staff members. The college also organised a patriotic song competition. The first prize was won by department of music.

Varsity watch

n Ranchi University has formed a two-member committee to probe into the grant of affiliation to two B.Ed colleges in the state government.

Last year the state government started academic activities in four colleges that were closed for years.

The colleges were Women’s B.Ed College Bariatu, Men’s B.Ed College, Ranchi, on the district school campus. The other colleges were in Devghar and Hazaribagh.

Ranchi University has provided affiliation to the colleges that were closed for more than 10 years and therefore the university administration is keeping a vigil on the functioning of the institutes. The committee comprises DSW Vitor Tigga and C. Tigga.
