This Easter is proving to be especially good for the cash box of a certain bakery outlet in Jamshedpur. A glance at the list of goodies on offer, you will know why.
Brubeck Bakery on Bistupur Main Road has come up with a special fare for Easter with items like the Easter egg and hot cross buns disappearing fast off the shelves.
There are also special cakes, which, to quote the idiom, are selling like hot cakes.
According to Brubeck Bakery’s proprietor Ryan D’Costa, although they had been making these items during Easter for the past three years, the demand has picked up only this year.
“It is not only Christians who are making a beeline for our creations, but also non-Christians who are buying buns, cakes and Easter eggs for gifting to their friends. The orders started pouring since Monday and we began supplying to our customers from Thursday,” Ryan added.
The unique, innovative treats perhaps explain the craze.
The outlet has come up with two kinds of Easter eggs. One is the marzipan variety, priced at Rs 120 per piece. It has been prepared with marzipan, cashew nuts and barfi (sugar, cardamom powder and butter) with an icing of almond.
The other one is chocolate Easter Egg, which has a coating of chocolate and a filling of yummy butterscotch. At a price tag of Rs 100 per piece, these are a must try.
“Apart from feasting on Easter eggs, we also gift them to relatives and friends. I have purchased a few pieces this year. I did not know that these products are available in the city. We used to have it at our native place in Mangalore,” said Victor Joseph, an employee of Tata Motors and a resident of Telco colony.
The list at the bakery is, of course, incomplete without the hot cross buns, priced at Rs 20 per piece. “Stuffed with dry fruits, the buns have been spiced up with cinnamon and cardamom. We have decked it up with a symbolic cross made up of flour,” added Ryan.
Another item that has become a hit is the Simnel cake introduced last year.
“Simnel cake is a toasted, light fruit cake that is covered with marzipan. Priced at Rs 350, it is similar to Christmas cake. The top coating of marzipan or almond paste is also baked. On the top of the cake, around the edge, there are eleven marzipan balls representing the 11 true disciples of Jesus. Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus, has been excluded,” the owner said.
Till 3pm on Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), 200 hot cross buns and 150 Easter eggs had been sold with the sale expected to rise in the evening. Five orders have been placed for Simnel cakes.
