Lions care for citizen health

Association of Lions Club International organised a free medical check-up camp and a cultural programme in Jamshedpur on Wednesday as a part of its centenary year celebrations.

Association of Lions Club International organised a free medical check-up camp and a cultural programme in Jamshedpur on Wednesday as a part of its centenary year celebrations.

As many as 12 specialists, including those from cardiology, ophthalmology, diabetes, dental surgery and neurology, screened around 250 patients at the camp at The Bengal Club in Sakchi.

Among the hospitals that offered their services were Fortis Hospitals and Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital. Some city-based pathology labs also offerred free tests such as ECG.

The association has decided to organise more such medical camps every month.

"The club organises social activities throughout the centenary year. We look forward to organising regular free health check-up camps for the needy," said Tapas Chatterjee, president of the Lions Club of Jamshedpur (Tatanagar).

Members said they conducted social work to pay tribute to their founder Melvin Jones who helped establish Lions Clubs International in June 1917. Today, the club is one of the world's largest social organisations with services spread over 210 countries.

The Lions Club International (district 322A), the umbrella organisation of 74 clubs across Jharkhand and Bihar, has 2,800 members who work on health, education, hunger, vision, environment, disability and welfare of the aged.

The Association of Lions Club International also organised a cultural event and held an installation ceremony for all newly-elected members to celebrate the centenary at Golmuri Club in the evening where Rajnish Kumar, the Lions Club district governor, was chief guest.
