Jamshedpur, Aug. 17: Tuesday morning dawned on the city with blood on the roads.

Four persons were killed and 24 injured in accidents at various places in the city since this morning.

A mob manhandled Diwaker Hansda, who was on emergency duty at the MGM Medical College Hospital, after a teenager succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident.

The situation was brought under control after police intervention. A posse of policemen was deployed at hospital premises on the request of the hospital authorities after the incident.

The mob was protesting against the death of Ranjan Srivastava, alleging that he died due to negligence of the doctor on emergency duty. Ranjan, who ran a phone booth at Govindpur, sustained waist injuries while getting down from a mini-bus near Kerala Samajam School in Sakchi this morning.

A more gruesome accident occurred on the Agrico-Bhuiyandih road near the National Metallurgical Laboratory flats at Bhuiyandih under Sidhgora police station area around 1 pm when a trailer ran over some labourers and vegetable-sellers by the road, killing two persons and injuring nine.

The labourers were digging a trench to lay telephone cables in the area when the mishap took place.

The trailer driver fled abandoning the vehicle (NL05-3225). The trailer was heading towards Mango via Dimna Road from Golmuri.

Soon after the mishap, youths flattened the tyres of the trailer and pelted stones at the other trailers and trucks passing through the area.

They had to be reined in by a police contingent led by the deputy superintendent of police (traffic), F.K.N. Kuzur.

Kuzur said the driver of the trailer might have been drunk. “I got the vehicle checked and found that the brakes as well as the steering of the trailer were functioning. This leaves no room for speculations that the mishap could have occurred due to a mechanical fault,” he said.

The police rushed those seriously injured to the MGM Medical College Hospital. They have been identified as Mohitesh Kumar, Lakhan Chandra and Dhanpati Chandra.

Those killed in the mishap were identified as Chotu Gope and Meghnath, both residents of Roladih, Potka.

Another mishap took place on the Gamharia-Adityapur Main road near Usha Martin under Gamharia police station area, when a 407 Tata truck was hit by a speeding dumper from behind.

The truck, which was carrying 35 daily-wagers including women and children overturned, injuring 15 persons.

One of the men succumbed to his injuries on the way. His identity, however, could not be ascertained.
