Plum package: BIT-Mesra in Ranchi

Desi girls — and boys too — of BIT-Mesra can swear by Indiagenous employment, with Mumbai-based innovative web product developer Directi offering the fattest pay so far this placement season.

The Rs 20.5 lakh per annum package, promised to two students — one each from computer science and IT disciplines, also reflects an economic turnaround in the domestic tech sector.

Besides Directi, 64 headhunters have camped on campus to cream off bright Mesra minds. Among the other wallet-warming recruiters are the India arms of Amazon and DE Shaw. Each has offered Rs 15 lakh a year to five students, three from computer science and two from IT. Bangalore-headquartered e-commerce company Flipkart has fielded three BIT computer science geeks, each for Rs 12.5 lakh per annum.

Last season, social networking giant Facebook was the top recruiter with its offer crossing a crore. Software developer EPIC too created a placement at BIT with its epic USD 1.09 lakh offer to an MCA student. In 2012, US giant Microsoft had offered the highest package of Rs 62 lakh per annum.

Having studied this season’s placement trend, officials at BIT-Mesra have drawn the inference that compared to global economy, the Indian economy is growing at a quicker pace. Thus, creating more than enough jobs.

The cradle’s placement season will end in April. So far, 450 offers have poured in, while 315 engineering students out of 400 have already bagged jobs.

“The highest pays have been offered by Indian or India-based firms. It is indeed a good sign,” said training and placement cell officer S. Sinha.

He, however, conceded that the recruitment process had begun at a not-so-promising note last August.

“It picked up pace with time. From November last year, core sector (non-IT) companies too started visiting the campus, improving the overall placement scenario. Consultancy firms were among others who found merit in our students,” Sinha added.

The long list of desi recruiters includes Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hero Motorcorp, L&T, Tata Steel, Idea Cellular, Airtel and Bharti Infratel. Other prominent headhunters on campus were Exide Technologies, Oracle, IBM, Infosys, Samsung, Volvo and Hyundai. IBM, Infosys and Cognizant have offered the lowest salary of Rs 3.01 lakh per annum to around 300 students.
