It is time to obey motor vehicle rules to the letter.

The East Singhbhum district police have decided to launch a full-fledged drive against tinted glasses on cars in Jamshedpur from Tuesday. Also, vehicles without proper number plates and those with forged press or police stickers will be taken to task.

Divulging details of the crackdown, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amol V. Homkar said that a team of officers would be deployed in Sakchi or Bistupur. "It will intercept cars with tinted glasses," he said.

The SSP referred to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, to say that windscreen and rear windows of vehicles should have a light transmission of 70 per cent, and for side windows the same should be at least 50 per cent.

"Several crimes, including sexual assault on women, often take place in such cars. Offenders prefer to use tinted glasses to evade public gaze and conceal their identity. No one will be spared. The team of police officers has been instructed to prosecute those car owners who will try to defy the order," said Homkar.

Ironically, politicians in the steel city also prefer to use these black films.

Homkar pointed out that the police team would also act against vehicle owners, including those of two-wheelers, for using stickers of police or press.

"The press stickers can be used by only scribes or photo journalists. We know that there are several vehicle owners who use the press stickers to evade regular drives. Similarly those who use the police stickers on their vehicles will also be taken to task. No private vehicle will be allowed to use the police sticker," said SSP Homkar.
