Jamshedpur: Schoolchildren will finally be able to get a break from staring at boring diagrams on blackboards in classrooms and instead watch the adventures of Mowgli and Spider-Man.

To encourage students to watch good cinema, social outfit Celluloid Chapter in Jamshedpur will soon launch the first-ever film club in a government school.

After Jamshedpur Women's College, People's Academy High School in Baradwari will be the first school in the state to launch a film club, which will be inaugurated on November 4.

"We got the proposal of opening a film club and immediately grabbed the offer. Children will not only get to watch good movies but also appreciate and learn about art, science, technology and literature. Movies will be screened at hall on the school campus," said Chandradip Pandey, principal of People's Academy High School.

The Celluloid Chapter will help the school screen movies at regular intervals throughout the year. Members of the outfit will also make the children understand the different technicalities behind making a movie. The club will be managed by students and mentored by the teachers.

"For children of government schools, who mainly belong to rural areas, a film is all about glitz and glamour. So a film club in a school is a necessity. We want children to appreciate a movie and also learn the various aspects of film making," said Amitava Ghosh of Celluloid Chapter, who is also the secretary of Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI).

The outfit is yet to decide the kind of movies that will be screened at the film club.

"We are yet to chalk out the time and the kind of movies that will be screened. Generally we plan to screen children movies and films that will have an educational value," said Ghosh, adding a film society should be set up in the state to promote the culture of films in schools and colleges.

The outfit also plans to organise a Children Film Festival where school students will get be able to screen short films.

According to Ghosh, the club will also hold regular discussions on films with the students. "The club will also encourage children to make short films on their phones so that they get a chance to explore film making as a career option," he said.
