Jamshedpur, July 13: Next time you throw a banana peel or spit on the platform at Tatanagar railway station, you might be given a bucket of water and a mop to clean up the mess.

Taking a cue from the Metro Railway in Calcutta, the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway has decided to implement a cleanliness drive in all the important railway stations under the division.

The authorities plans to involve Scouts and Guides of railway schools and Kendriya Vidyalaya in the drive, which will start next month. Sources said the authorities have approached some school in this regard. “The Scouts and Guides will be deputed at Tatanagar, Sini, Jharsuguda, Chakradharpur and Rourkela railway stations. They will be provided with buckets of water, to be given to passengers who dirty the platforms,” said an official of the Tatanagar station.

Railway officials said the drive would curb the tendencies of passengers to dirty the stations. The officials said though cleanliness drives are periodically undertaken by the railway authorities, the proposed campaign will be permanent in nature.

M.N. Ojha, senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur railway division, said: “Tatanagar and Rourkela, which are on the A-category list, should be well-maintained and passengers should be made aware that they too are responsible for keeping the stations clean. As a result, we have decided to implementing some strict measures.”

Officials said the Scouts and Guides would be divided into groups and dressed in uniform. “If an erring passenger refuses to wash the mess, the Scouts and Guides will seek the assistance of the railway police,” they said.

Sources said a meeting was held at the Garden Reach headquarters of South Eastern Railway recently to discuss the drive. Senior officials from the Chakradharpur division, including Ojha and divisional railway manager S.C. Jha were present at the meeting.
