Over 500 undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational courses students of Ranchi College and Doranda College showcased their creativity, grey matter and language skills, among other things, as part of their ongoing youth festivals on Tuesday.

While at Ranchi College, around 250 students took part in painting, rangoli-making, collage and clay modelling competitions, nearly 300 at Doranda College tested their brains in a quiz competition and showcased how articulate they are through an elocution contest on Day Two of the three-day festivals that began on Monday. Doranda College also held painting, collage and rangoli-making competitions on Tuesday.

On Monday, both the colleges had organised singing, dancing, folk orchestra, Indian instrumental, light vocal and classical music competitions.

Students at Ranchi College mostly depicted nature and its pristine glory through their paintings and rangoli as city life robs us of that pleasure.

"Everyone admires natural beauty but in order to preserve it, we have to make efforts. Through my painting, I have shown the rich flora and fauna, which nature has gifted us," said Rajiv Ranjan, third-year BSc student of the college.

Students of Doranda College, too, took up pertinent issues and themes to portray them in their artworks.

Shweta Kumari, a third-year history honours student, depicted woman empowerment through her colourful rangoli design.

In collage competition, students of Ranchi College used newspaper cuttings on the topic of rural life. "I made a collage that showed farmers working in a paddy field," said Nupur Prasad, a second-year microbiology student.

Students of both the colleges also got their hands dirty in clay modelling competition to make sculptures and other decorative items. "I am very much passionate about making clay models since school days. Today (Tuesday), I got the opportunity to show my talent and hopefully I will be able to win the first prize and enter the inter-college youth festival," said Ashwini Sinha, a first-year geography honours student of Doranda College.

The colleges had held a selection process last month based on which the students were allowed to take part in the festivals. At Ranchi College, 250 students were selected out of 600 while at Doranda College around 300 were chosen from 800.

The winners of various events will be announced on Wednesday at the respective colleges.

After youth festivals get over in different colleges, first, second and third prize winners in all events will take part in the inter-college youth festival to be held on November 26 and 27 at the autonomous St Xavier's College.
