Jamshedpur, Sept. 22: With Singur-hit Tatas unwavering on its October launch date for the Nano, ancillary units in Pune and Pantnagar have been facing the heat of meeting the deadline.
Now, add Jamshedpur’s auto component hub of Adityapur to that list.
If the Tatas put the Bengal government on a formal notice yesterday for a possible pullout from the sprawling Nano plant site in Hooghly district of Bengal, it has been working side by side on Plan B.
So, at least 12 key entrepreneurs based in the Adityapur Industrial Area, about 2km from the steel city, have received various drawings of spares with a note that they work on quotations immediately.
But those who have been sounded out are tightlipped.
“We have signed an agreement with Tata Motors not to reveal details about the offer regarding manufacturing Nano spares,” said the proprietor of an ancillary which manufactures hydraulic and pneumatic fittings for Tata Motors’ trucks.
He said his company had studied the drawings of the car’s hydraulic fittings and had even sent a quotation.
“Since we manufacture hydraulic and pneumatic fittings for big vehicles, we can make similar equipment for the small car too,” he added.
There are as many as 180 Tata Motors’ ancillary units operating out of the Adityapur Industrial Area.
Over the years, many like International Auto and JMT have grown in size and reputation for their ability to adhere to quality and precision standards.
Among the others that have been sounded out with drawings for spares are ancillaries that manufacture sockets — of various dimensions — for big as well as the small cars, steering wheels for trucks, and those who deal in nuts and bolts of various sizes.
The ancillary that makes sockets and is based in phase II of Adityapur, has also submitted a quotation.
“Not much time is left for contributing for the Rs 1 lakh car project. We have to be remain extremely watchful against rivals in the field,” he said.
He said ancillaries in Pune and Pantnagar were also working on similar drawings.
“We are least bothered whether the small car is being manufactured at Singur or Pantnagar. But what we are concerned about is maintaining quality of the car’s spares and meeting the deadline,” he added.
