Sujal Kumar (13), a student of residential Dhanbad Blind Relief Society School, did something on Friday that he never had in his entire life before.

He tasted a burger.

"So far, I had only heard about burgers, never tasted one. But today (Friday) I tasted one at a special feast in the newly-launched food court of Sonotel Hotel. I also had idly but the burger was the tastiest," said the teen.

Sujal was among the seven more students of the special school who had the lunch date at the food court in Ozone Galleria Mall, Saraidhela, organised by Sonotel Hotel as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Accompanied by Braille teacher Haripado Mahto and the school cook Ganga Devi, the students were brought for lunch at 1pm by the hotel from their school in New Colony, Jagjivan Nagar, 4km away.

The students spent more than an hour at the food court enjoying multi-cuisine fare from counters like Dakshin, Tadka, Go Italino, The Great Food of China, Chandni Chowk, Shakes and Smoothies, washing down the lunch with fizzy drinks.

So what if they couldn't see the riot of colours on the platters, they relished the burst of flavours and above all felt and appreciated the warmth shown by hotel staff towards them.

As the food court has self-service rules, special staff were deputed for the visually impaired children to read the menu out.

After the lunch, Class VII student Angad Kumar (13) said he was thankful to the hotel for gifting them a tasty and spicy day.

"We came to know about this treat only on Thursday and we were looking forward to it all night. I am a big fan of dosa, sambar and chutney but I also tasted papdi chat. I liked that too," said the son of a daily-wage earner.

Teacher Mahto said it was a nice break in monotony.

"At school, we also impart these poor visually-challenged children vocational skills like music, computers and making incense sticks to make them self-reliant," said the teacher.?

Revenue manager of Sonotel Hotel Arka Ghosh, the brain behind the initiative, said they had decided to celebrate the second Friday of each month as CSR Day.

"Since the food court has been recently inaugurated, we started our CSR activity from this month itself and chose the third Friday this time," said Ghosh. "Seeing the smiles of these children enjoying the food made our day," he smiled.
