Chandigarh: A popular Punjabi singer was shot at in Mohali late on Friday night and a gangster claimed responsibility for the shooting on Facebook.

" Mein Dilpreet Singh Dhahan sariya nu dasna chaunda k ajj parmish verma de goliyan baziyan apa mariya (I, Dilpreet Singh Dhahan, want to inform everybody that I shot Parmish Verma today)," read the post, which was accompanied by photographs of both Dhahan and the injured singer, cross-marked in red.

Police sources said Verma, a popular singer behind the YouTube hits Gaal ni Kadni and Shada, and a friend, identified as Kulwant Singh Chahal, were in a Toyota Fortuner when they were attacked while returning home to Mohali from an event in Chandigarh. Some bouncers Verma had employed had just been dropped off.

"Around 12.10am the bouncers were dropped... about 6km away from Verma's home. On the way another vehicle overtook Verma's Fortuner and stopped the vehicle," a police officer said.

According to the accounts of both Verma and his friend, a lone gunman stepped out of the vehicle, a Creta, and opened fire at them. A bullet grazed the singer's leg, while his companion was hit in the leg.

The 1986-born singer - son of a retired Panjab University professor and who had started his career shooting video films - kept his cool and drove on.

As the man kept firing away, Verma called up the police chief of Mohali, Kuldeep Singh Chahal, who advised him to keep driving. The two then headed to a private hospital in Mohali where both were admitted.

SSP Chahal said at least six to seven rounds of bullets were fired at the vehicle.

Dhahan, accused of murdering a village chief last year, has two Facebook accounts. The first claim for the shooting came on one of the accounts around three hours after the incident. A similar statement was posted on the other account on Saturday around 6.30pm.

"Another gang led by Sampat Nehra has also claimed responsibility for the shooting. We are probing how far both the claims are true," said a police officer.

Dhahan is the main accused in the murder of a sarpanch from Hoshiarpur's Khurd village who was killed outside a gurdwara in Chandigarh last year.
