Chandigarh, March 23: Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has got the go-ahead to continue with his television assignments, sources in the state government said today.
They said advocate-general Atul Nanda, who submitted a report to chief minister Amarinder Singh this evening, did not find any conflict of interest between the cricketer-turned-politician's TV commitments and responsibilities as culture minister.
"Now that the advocate-general has given his legal opinion, the matter is settled. The chief minister will not have to take any drastic measures," said a minister.
Amarinder had been weighing the option of changing Sidhu's culture portfolio had it been found to be in conflict with his TV work.
Since retiring as a player, Sidhu has been a regular on TV as a permanent guest in The Kapil Sharma Show, apart from commentating on matches. After taking charge as minister, he had announced that he would continue with his TV assignments without compromising his ministerial responsibilities. "What I do from 7pm to 6am is nobody's business," he had said yesterday.
Amarinder today backed his minister on the issue, which had stirred a controversy. "One needs a source of income," he said. "How does one live without adequate income? Should the ministers turn corrupt?"
