New Delhi, Feb. 13: The Centre is considering a proposal to restore "Calcutta" to the name of the Indian Institute of Management through an amendment to a bill that refers to the business school as "IIM Kolkata".
Sources in the human resource development ministry said the IIM bill introduced last week in the Lok Sabha had "unintentionally" referred to "IIM Calcutta" as "IIM Kolkata".
"Kolkata" would mean that the IIM loses its coveted place in the "ABC" triumvirate denoting the IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta. "K" might also create confusion between Kolkata and Kozhikode, the northern Kerala city that also has an IIM.
In the case of IIM Bangalore, the bill has not changed the name to Bengaluru.
However, the bill drops the name of Rajiv Gandhi from IIM Shillong. The business school, started in the Northeast in 2008, was named after the former Prime Minister by the UPA government.
The bill is likely to be sent to a parliamentary standing committee. After the committee submits a report, the government will go through the recommendations and move official amendments as required, the sources said.
The bill seeks to confer on the business schools the power to grant degrees. So far, the IIMs have been issuing PG diplomas and fellowships.
