Srinagar, Aug. 14: Separatists celebrated Pakistan's Independence Day today in Kashmir, with one leader filming and circulating on social media the unfurling of Pakistani flags and singing of the neighbour's national anthem.

Sources said Srinagar, Anantnag and Tral were among the places where Pakistani flags were hoisted despite the authorities having clamped curfew-like curbs in areas like Srinagar's old city - a separatist stronghold - to prevent such celebrations.

Hardline woman separatist Asiya Andrabi and dozens of her burqa-clad supporters assembled inside a house on Srinagar's outskirts, unfurling Pakistani flags and singing the neighbour's anthem.

Andrabi's group Dukhtaran-e-Milat made a video of the proceedings and circulated it on networking sites, mocking the authorities and embarrassing the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government, which has been accused by rivals of being soft on the separatists.

The video showed the women - each with a badge of the Pakistani flag pasted on their burqas - in queues, singing the anthem.

Another separatist leader, Ahsan Untoo, and his supporters trooped to the heart of Srinagar and started distributing sweets among the people. Untoo was himself draped in a Pakistani flag.

The separatists have in recent weeks made several such brazen displays of support, the trigger for which was a pro-Pakistan rally organised by hardline Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam in April this year. Alam was released by the PDP-led government amid massive protests outside the Valley, only to be rearrested after the rally.

The government had also booked Andrabi under the anti-terror Unlawful Activities Prevention Act but did not arrest her, fearing it would further antagonise the separatists.

The PDP played down today's incidents as a "publicity stunt".
