Mumbai, Jan. 12: Jaya Bachchan’s Bengali payesh will have to wait for another time because Oprah Winfrey has decided to dine with Parmeshwar Godrej.
The American chat queen, visiting Mumbai on January 18-19, was to have dinner and payesh at the Bachchans’ residence in Juhu. Not anymore, if an invitee to Godrej’s dinner party is to be believed.
Mumbai’s movers and shakers, the Bachchans included, are expected to be at the beach-front Godrej residence, which is half a kilometre from Amitabh’s bungalow.
A top industrialist’s wife invited to the dinner said Oprah was keen to meet Mumbai’s who’s who, not just Bollywood stars. “She is a smart businesswoman and understands the potential of the Indian market. So she wants to meet the rich and the powerful of Mumbai, not just the Bollywood crowd. Parmeshwar will bring in a right mix of people whom Oprah will be interested to meet. She has hosted many Hollywood celebrities, she knows the routine,” the industrialist’s wife said.
The Bachchans, it seems, were not comfortable with the idea of a large number of people in their house. “They only call home people they are intimate friends with, so the party scene had to be shifted to the Godrej villa,” said a source.
The sprawling Godrej bungalow has hosted Richard Gere and Liz Hurley in the past. On January 19, the guest list will have only the top Bollywood stars.
“The Bachchans will either meet her separately at some other time or visit her at Parmeshwar’s party. It has not been decided yet. But Oprah has expressed keenness to see Ash’s baby,” a Bachchan family source said.
Aishwarya and Oprah have been friends since the former Miss World featured on her television show in April 2005. Later in 2009, Ash introduced husband Abhishek to America through the Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah referred to the couple as being “more famous than Brangelina” on the show.
Oprah will be in India to shoot an episode of her new show — the Next Chapter — with celebrity spiritual guru Deepak Chopra. She will stop by in Mumbai en route to the Jaipur Literary Festival that she plans to attend between January 20-22.
