Washington, Feb. 26 (PTI): A Sikh man was shot at by truck-borne gunmen near Florida’s Daytona Beach on Saturday night, in an apparent hate crime incident.
waljit Singh, 46, who was accompanied by his son, received multiple bullet injuries in his thigh and torso, officials said. He was later admitted to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment. His son managed to escape unhurt. The motive behind the attack is not yet known.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed a PIL seeking distribution of LPG to the common man at less than Re 1 per cylinder, on a par with the rate at which it is being supplied to industrial houses. The bench said “everything can’t be resolved by courts”.
Mumbai (PTI): The investigating officer in the 26/11 terror case resigned on Monday after 35 years of service, police said. Ramesh Mahale, 56, had helped build a water-tight case against Pakistan terrorist Ajmal Kasab. The reason for his resignation is not yet clear though there is speculation that he had differences with seniors.
New Delhi (PTI): The government has defended Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson P.J. Kurien, who has been under attack in connection with the Suryanelli sex slave case, with parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath saying police inquiries and courts have cleared him of all charges.
Mumbai (PTI): The navy rescued nine members on board fishing trawler Kadal Matha that developed ingress of water in high seas of north-west Goa on Monday. INS Nashak, an unit of the Western Naval Command at Mumbai, located the trawler within two hours of receiving the distress message.
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi has become the first state to ban manual scavenging, chief minister Sheila Dikshit has said at an event organised by a safai karamcharis commission. Last month, the Supreme Court had pulled up the Centre for failing to enact a law banning manual scavenging.
New Delhi, Feb. 26 (PTI): Delhi has been voted as the most unsafe metro in India by women travelling alone for leisure, business or both, a recent survey conducted by travel portal TripAdvisor has found.
Mumbai was rated as the safest city by a majority of respondents, while Ahmedabad and Bangalore were voted second with 12 per cent votes each. Eighty-four per cent of women claimed the capital to be most unsafe with the recent spate of crime against women.
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has permitted yoga televangelist Ramdev to hold a rally in Solan. The municipal authorities had asked them to pay Rs 50,000 as rent but on Tuesday decided to charge only Rs 15,000.
Chennai, Feb. 26 (PTI): The Tamil Nadu government today said it will take steps to control and regulate sale of acid against the backdrop of acid attacks that claimed the lives of two women.
“A bill (in this regard) will be moved during the coming budget session of the state assembly and adopted,” chief minister Jayalalithaa said. Madras High Court moved for a ban on over-the-counter sale of the chemical after the death of two women, both in their 20s, from acid attacks in the last fortnight.
Mumbai: MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s convoy was stoned by suspected NCP supporters at Ahmednagar in western Maharashtra on Tuesday. Some NCP offices in Mumbai and elsewhere were attacked in retaliation.
Rameswaram (PTI): Sri Lankan naval men allegedly attacked a group of fishermen from Tamil Nadu while they were fishing near Katchatheevu on Tuesday, officials said. They attacked the fishermen with ropes and steel pipes damaging their nets, communication equipment, seized their catch and threatened to open fire if they came near the islet.
Dhemaji (PTI): Six labourers were killed by a rampaging domestic elephant on Tuesday morning in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Siang bordering Assam’s Dhemaji, the police said. The pachyderm had to be shot.
Medininagar (PTI): The students of a middle school have locked out the school for an indefinite period alleging bias in distribution of bicycles among girl students by the authorities. The students alleged that as per the state government policy, the bicycles have to be distributed among girl students but the headmaster of the school had adopted a pick and choose policy.
New Delhi (PTI): A court has rejected the plea of two Zee group editors for a court-monitored probe in the extortion case lodged against them by Congress MP Naveen Jindal. The court said they cannot “dictate” and “divert” the investigation.
