NRI bribe charges

Washington, Nov. 20 (PTI): A couple of Indian origin have been arrested on charges of bribing US government officials. FBI investigators have also found an estimated $400,000 hidden inside their closet.

Authorities said Amrik and Ravinder Melhi, who owned a number of liquor shops in Maryland, would pay officials to ensure the transport and distribution of untaxed cigarettes and alcohol. The FBI has also arrested and charged three police officers with corruption.

NDA syllabus

Pune (PTI): The National Defence Academy has added a “finishing school capsule” to its syllabus. Graduates will now be trained in “the aspect of being an officer and a gentleman”, the academy said.

Pakistan fire

Lahore (PTI): Nearly two dozen tents housing Sikh and Hindu pilgrims caught fire in Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak. Police reported no casualties. Thousands had gathered in the city to celebrate the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism.

CBI arrest

Bilaspur (PTI): The CBI has arrested an Indian Oil Corporation accounts official for allegedly accepting a bribe from a transporter who had registered a complaint with the probe agency. The CBI has recovered Rs 9 lakh worth of assets from the official’s residence in Madhya Pradesh.

TN refugees

Rameswaram (PTI): Three Sri Lankan refugees have been arrested in Tamil Nadu while attempting to escape to their country in a boat owned by a local fisherman. Police said the men, aged between 25 and 35 years, had each paid the fisherman Rs 35,000 as ferry charges.

Delhi fraud

New Delhi (PTI): A couple from Karnataka have been arrested for allegedly cheating a Delhi-based doctor of Rs 25 lakh by promising to have his son admitted in a medical college. Police said the couple spent most of the amount on a pleasure trip in South-East Asia.
