New Delhi, Feb. 17: The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a plea by gutka and pan masala makers to extend their deadline of March 1, 2011, for shifting to non-plastic wrappers.
The gutka-makers urged the top court to extend the deadline because the environment ministry had in the meantime banned plastic packaging of food products. The bench ruled that the petitioners’ deadline would not change.
Mumbai: Bombay High Court has ordered the transfer of the Adarsh missing papers case from the crime branch to the CBI. The “order of transfer has no reflection on the investigation conducted by the crime branch”, the bench said.
New Delhi: A. K. Antony and top military officials will visit the Northeast for two days from Friday to assess counter-insurgency measures and deployments on the frontier with China. During the visit, the defence establishment will seek reports from commanders and from select officials in Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.
Bhopal (PTI): A retired colonel shot himself dead at his residence on Thursday while his wife and elder son, a major, were at home. Police said Mukesh Sharma, who retired from the army in 2008, was depressed for over a month and had been under treatment.
Durgapur: Armed coal smugglers allegedly backed by the CPM abducted three Trinamul Congress workers in Burdwan and shot dead two of them early on Wednesday but police blamed it on gang rivalry. The bodies of Sheikh Aminul, 27, and Sheikh Kalam, 26, were found beside a pond.
