Washington, July 4 (PTI): Five Indian-American kid chefs have made it to the exclusive list of 54 winners of the White House-launched national “Healthy Lunchtime Challenge” as part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative.
Shefali Singh, Vijay Dey, Anisha Patel, Ganesh Selvakumar and Devanshi Udeshi, along with the 49 others, will be honoured at the Kids’ “State Dinner” at the White House on July 9.
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has asked Dayalu Ammal to approach the Supreme Court with her petition challenging an order dismissing her plea for exemption from appearing as a witness in the 2G case. DMK chief M. Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu has been summoned before a trial court on Monday.
Srinagar (PTI): The Jammu and Kashmir government has started the first-ever bus service from Kargil to Jammu, fulfiling a long-pending demand of people from the region. The high-tech bus is equipped with all the latest facilities and will charge passengers Rs 1,000.
New Delhi (PTI): The owner of the bus in which a 23-year-old trainee paramedic was gang-raped on December 16, has deposed as a prosecution witness. Dinesh Yadav said the bus was in the continuous custody of its driver Ram Singh on the day of the incident and the following day.
New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has spared jail terms given to two men in drink driving cases. The court asked Harbhajan Singh and Vinod Prasad, sentenced to 10 days and five days in jail, to perform community service at government hospitals, including doing “menial” jobs, as assigned by the medical superintendent.
Jammu (PTI): A Pakistani youth has been repatriated to his country, BSF officials have said. Mohmmad Asif, who is mentally unfit, was arrested after he ignorantly crossed over to this side of the Samba belt on June 26. The youth was handed over to Pakistani Rangers on Wednesday.
New Delhi, July 4 (PTI): A Delhi consumer forum has ordered Tata Motors Finance Ltd to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to a customer for stopping his car on the road and seizing it for alleged non-repayment of loan.
The firm had failed to submit evidence that it had sent a notice to the customer before taking away his car, the forum noted. The Supreme Court, several high courts and the National Consumer Commission have directed finance companies “to adopt a civil procedure” while taking possession of vehicles and not use musclemen, it said.

Kumbakonam (PTI): A two-and-a-half-year old boy was killed
a fire at a labourer’s house in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district on Thursday. The fire spread quickly and gutted nine neighbouring huts, but there were no other casualties. A spark from a mosquito coil is suspected to have triggered the blaze.

Mumbai, July 4 (PTI): Bombay High Court has allowed a litigant to depose in Tamil during recording of evidence in a court as she was not comfortable with Hindi.
The court also ordered appointment of an interpreter to help the litigant. A lower court had earlier rejected the applicant plea’s to depose in Tamil because it thought it was highly improbable that she does not know Hindi after residing in Mumbai for 23 years.
Kochi (PTI): Former Kerala minister and JD-S MLA, Jose Thettayil, embroiled in a sexual harassment case, has filed a petition in high court seeking to quash the case against him and his son. The plea would come up for hearing on Friday. Thettayil’s lawyer said the case was filed under political pressure.
Rewari (PTI): Four persons duped over two-dozen people on the pretext of auditioning them for a film at a hotel in Haryana’s Rewari, police said. The four fled without paying hotel bills amounting to over Rs 80,000 and also took 12 mobile phones and two laptops.
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has extended till July 22 the interim bail of former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala in the teachers’ recruitment scam on medical grounds. The court has asked Chautala to furnish his medical report in the next 10 days.
agar (PTI): Over 400 manuscripts, comprising 1.25 lakh folios, have been digitised by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. The digitisation work started on May 22. Academy secretary Khalid Bashir said it was a significant step towards preservation of the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Chandigarh, July 4 (PTI): A Delhi-based MBA graduate has been arrested for using Internet banking to hack into user accounts and transferring money.
Amit Sabharwal was held on the basis of a complaint by Dev Gupta who said Rs 1 lakh was removed from her husband’s account and transferred to the account of Vijay Chugh. She further alleged that her husband’s e-mail account and cellphone connection were blocked. Police have recovered ATM cards, cheque books and a fake voter ID card in the name of Vijay Chugh.
Bhubaneswar (PTI): The National Tiger Conservation Authority has asked the Odisha government to tie a radio collar around the neck of a Royal Bengal Tiger. The tiger first entered the Nandankanan Zoo on April 29 before escaping. It later returned on June 23 on its own. The collars are used to track animal migration for research.
