Mumbai, Oct. 23: An FIR has been lodged against singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who became famous as Shah Rukh Khan's playback voice in the '90s but has not sung a Bollywood song since 2013, for allegedly molesting a woman at a Durga Puja pandal in Mumbai yesterday.
The alleged incident happened during a cultural programme at the Lokhandwala Durgotsav that Abhijeet has been organising for the past 19 years in Andheri.
In a text message to The Telegraph, Abhijeet said he had "no idea" why the woman had filed the complaint and then went on to blame a conspiracy of "anti-Hindu forces".
The complainant is a 34-year-old woman whose uncle is also one of the organisers of the Lokhandwala puja.
"Gate crash and nuisance is the main factor. Every 1 is soooo happy with us Bcos We entertain every one in our Pujo...But the Main point is we were aware of anti-Hindu forceserrorist threats and sabotage of this Hindu Durga Puja..And that is working well for them," the singer texted.
Police rejected the religious conspiracy angle, saying the complaint was the "result of altercations".
Bollywood singers usually perform at the Lokhandwala puja. The alleged incident occurred around 10pm yesterday during singer Kailash Kher's programme, the police said.
"The complainant has said she was not allowed to enter despite a special pass. Finally she entered the auditorium and made her way to the front row - many in the audience protested against this and Abhijeet rushed in to physically throw her out of the auditorium. She has claimed that taking advantage of the melee, Abhijeet touched her bottom inappropriately," said Subhash Khanvilkar, senior police inspector at Oshiwara police station investigating the case.
The police said the woman immediately protested against Abhijeet's behaviour, following which she was taken backstage by women bouncers.
"She has said that here Abhijeet's sister came to meet her and pacify her, but instead a war of words ensued between the two and she was physically thrown out of the auditorium. She then came to the Oshiwara police station and lodged a complaint against Abhijeet Bhattacharya," said Khanvilkar.
An offence under IPC Sections 354 (a) (sexual harassment), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 34 was registered against the singer around 1am. "We have not summoned him for questioning yet. We need to go through the CCTV footage," Khanvilkar said.
The singer held a news conference in the afternoon to deny the allegations.
