London, April 15: Angelina Jolie flew home from London at the weekend with a generous consignment of packed and chilled Indian meals for her partner Brad Pitt in Los Angeles.
It helped she had a private jet on standby so that her staff could stock up with bhuna lamb, chicken korma and chicken tikka, plus Kingfisher and Cobra beer.
Jolie didn’t herself go to the Mogul restaurant in Bagshot, Surrey, since she was busy in London attending the G8 summit of foreign ministers in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees — the summit was seeking to outlaw the use of rape as a weapon of war.
Having placed the order, Jolie sent her bodyguard Ray to collect the food. Her son, Maddox, went along for the trip.
The Mogul in Bagshot, run by two Bangladeshi brothers, Tahir and Zakir Hussain, was established 19 years ago.
“This is not the first time she has ordered from this restaurant,” a source at Mogul told The Telegraph. “They have been here many times.”
Last year, the Hollywood couple entertained friends at the Mogul and ran up a bill of £3,000 (almost Rs 2.5 lakh), which included a £733.75 (Rs 61,116) tip for staff. They ordered champagne with the food.
There was no prior notice so staff were taken aback when the couple walked in with their friends and two bodyguards. Mindful of their privacy, they asked politely not to be photographed.
Among other Hollywood stars who have been to the restaurant is Russell Crowe, who was not above posing with staff in the kitchen.
“We have had royalty, too — Prince William, Prince Harry and Sophie (Countess of Wessex, who is married to Prince Edward),” the source added.
Prices for some dishes have crept up to nearly £20 (Rs 1,666) but others are more reasonable. “The restaurant is packed on Fridays and Saturdays.”
It is not unusual for Hollywood stars to fly back to America on their private jets loaded with takeaway curries. It is known that Tom Cruise has ordered food from the Bombay Brasserie. While Britain has between 8,000 and 10,000 curry houses (mostly run by hard working Bangladeshis), Indian food is yet to be discovered in the same way in the US.
While Jolie was in London, she thought it prudent to take back something for her partner. “Brad is back in America and has been longing for a decent curry. He really misses their Indian takeaway nights from when they lived in Surrey last year. Angelina arranged as a surprise for a load of it to be cooked and flash-freeze packed for her to fly home.”
At last week’s summit, the 37-year-old actress was involved in the serious business of campaigning against rape in time of war.
Speaking in London after a meeting of G8 foreign ministers including US secretary of state John Kerry and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, Jolie said the world needed to do more to prevent such crimes.
“Hundreds of thousands of women and children have been sexually assaulted, tortured or forced into sexual slavery in the wars of our generation,” Jolie said, flanked by eight ministers in suits and Zainab Hawa Bangura, United Nations special representative on sexual violence in conflicts.
“I believe their voices have been heard and that we finally have some hope to offer them,” Jolie added. “I welcome the long overdue stand that the G8 has taken.”
She emphasised: “wartime rape is not inevitable. This violence can be prevented, and it must be confronted.”
