New Delhi, Nov. 19: The parents of a young Delhi woman were arrested today for allegedly killing their daughter a day after she married her fiancee from another caste.
The parents, who are in their sixties with the father a businessman, told relatives initially that Bhavna, 21, had died of snake-bite, police said, adding the suspected honour killing occurred on Saturday and the body was cremated in the family’s native town of Rajasthan’s Alwar.
Bhavna had been missing since then and calls by Abhishek Seth, whom she had married on Friday at a temple, went unanswered. Suspicious, he lodged a complaint. “Bhavna’s parents have confessed to have throttled her to death at their Dwarka flat,” said an officer.
Abhishek, 24 and hailing from Punjab, is assistant manager (estates) at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, employed on contract. He had met Bhavna two years ago while she was graduating from Sri Venkateswara College, one of Delhi University’s prominent colleges.
Bhavna’s parents, who had been opposed to her relationship all along, brought her home early on Saturday promising a ceremonial wedding. “Once home, they asked her to divorce Abhishek and get married to a youth from their caste. She was killed when she refused,” the officer said.
