Chennai, Sept. 16 (Agencies): The bandh called in Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water-sharing issue shut down small and medium units here as well as the textiles hub of Tirupur, but had no effect on attendance in government offices.

The bandh had been called by farmers and traders and supported by the opposition.

Opposition leaders M.K. Stalin and Kanimozhi were among those detained for supporting the bandh by trying to block train tracks and roads.

Stalin, the treasurer of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, was detained along with some supporters when he tried to block the Egnore Railway station.

Kanimozhi, a DMK member of the Rajya Sabha, tried to block the arterial Anna Salai along with some supporters and was detained.

Meanwhile, an activist belonging to Naam Tamizhar Katchi, who had set himself on fire over the Cauvery issue on Thursday, succumbed to injuries on Friday morning, police said.

”We were giving him all possible treatment. However, he suffered a cardiac arrest and despite our best efforts, he could not be revived,” a senior hospital official told PTI.

Several establishments remained shut in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris districts, affecting normal life, in response to the bandh call.

About 20,000 small and medium scale units in and around the city and over 30,000 garment factories in the textile hub of Tirupur also extended support to the bandh and downed shutters, according to reports.

In Coimbatore, senior leaders of various political parties, including DMK and the Marumalarchi DMK, and farmers associations were arrested while trying to block railway tracks and roads.
