Ahmedabad, Dec. 23: Police raided a pre-wedding liquor party at an industrialist's 35-acre farmhouse on Vadodara's outskirts last night and detained about 260 people, including former IPL chairman Chirayu Amin.
All were let off after their blood samples were taken except for host Jitendra Shah and his son Abhay, who were arrested.
Under the state's new prohibition law, the highest punishment for selling or buying liquor is 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs 5 lakh, police said. The guests have been booked under a milder section that entails up to seven years in jail and is bailable.
Gujarat has been under prohibition since the early 1960s but the police couldn't remember a raid on such a scale on any liquor party attended by VIPs of similar stature.
Everyone present - 125 men and 134 women - were detained and booked, Vadodara (rural) superintendent of police Saurabh Tolumbia said. The detainees included Amin, chairman of Alembic Pharmaceuticals, and industrialist Rakesh Agrawal, he added.
A PTI report said the police had claimed to have seized 103 bottles of liquor and 116 bottles of beer, worth Rs 1.28 lakh, as well as 80 cars.
Gujarat had through an ordinance last week increased the punishments under its prohibition law from three years for serious violations and one to three months for minor ones. The amendment followed a sustained campaign by OBC leader Alpesh Thakor.
The police had been tipped off about the party ahead of tomorrow's wedding of Shah's granddaughter.
