Bangalore, Aug. 29: After forcing a shutdown in Parliament, the BJP unveiled plans of a week-long satyagraha here from September 1 by party topguns.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will ring the curtain on the agitation by addressing a rally on September 8, which will be followed by a meeting of BJP central office-bearers.

Except Vajpayee, all the prominent leaders, scores of legislators and numerous party workers drawn from across the country would court arrest during the agitation, BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu announced after a meeting attended by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and former Union minister Ved Prakash Goel.

He told a news conference that the party will agitate for the withdrawal of cases against Uma Bharti, sacking of “tainted” Union ministers and restoration of a plaque containing Veer Savarkar’s words at Cellular Jail. They would also urge the Centre to “stop confrontation with the Opposition and start governance”, Naidu said.

Leader of Opposition .K. Advani, with spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Goel and Om Mathur in tow, will kick off the satyagraha on Wednesday.

On subsequent days, party workers would be lead by Murli Manohar Joshi, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Kalyan Singh, Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha and Naidu himself.

All state units of the party would be represented during the agitation, the party chief said.
