Berhampur, July 4 :     The constitution of another intra-party organisation, the Biju Seva Dal, has given the beleaguered Biju Janata Dal leadership more food for thought. The Seva Dal was formed under the leadership of Damodar Patra on Friday with the objective of ?rendering selfless service to the people of Orissa?. It is the latest in a list of new organisations floated by BJD leaders after the constitution of the Kalinga Sena and the Biju Sena. Patra told newspersons that he chose to launch the Seva Dal in Ganjam district because it happened to be the BJD?s strongest support base. On whether he had acquired party chief Naveen Patnaik?s permission to form the organisation, Patra said he had written to the former as well as other BJD leaders. However, none of them had replied so far, he said. About 100 BJD activists from Ganjam district have already joined the Seva Dal, but Patra said this was only ?a small beginning?. He said a Seva Dal unit would be established in Bhubaneswar recently and the remaining districts of the state covered in due course. Patra said the majority of BJD legislators and former MPs backed his decision to float the Seva Dal. However, he declined to name any of them except former Lok Sabha MP from Bhubaneswar Prasanna Kumar Patsani. Like the Congress Seva Dal, the Biju Seva Dal is planning to introduce a special uniform for its activists. Patra said the organisation was open to all admirers of Biju Patnaik, including people not owing allegiance to the BJD. ?The Seva Dal will include retired bureaucrats, professors and technocrats who desire to fulfil Biju Patnaik?s dreams,? he said. Though the organisation?s objective is ?service to the people?, sources said it would also try to be a ?catalytic political force? within the BJD. Patra said that in the event of Naveen Patnaik questioning the legitimacy of the Seva Dal, he would get it registered as a non- governmental organisation. ?Just wait and see what our organisation develops into within the next three months,? he said. Asked whether Janata Dal members were welcome to join the Seva Dal, Patra said, ?We will definitely try to convince Janata Dal activists to join our organisation, and the BJD for that matter.? Patra said the Seva Dal could actually succeed in patching up the warring BJD factions and forge unity. He said all members of the new organisation regarded Naveen Patnaik as their leader, which was indicative of their commitment to the BJD.
