Varanasi/Lucknow, May 18 (PTI): At least 12 people were killed and many trapped when a portion of a flyover under construction near the railway station collapsed on Tuesday, police said.

The flyover collapsed in the afternoon, officials said. Rescue teams were rushed to the spot. Senior police and administration officers also reached the site.

“It is feared that several people are buried under the rubble,” an official said.

Some vehicles were also crushed in the incident, they said.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief while deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya is reaching, an official spokesperson said in Lucknow.

The chief minister has set up a three-member committee to probe flyover collapse, an official said.

He has also directed the district administration and PWD officials to take all necessary steps for relief and rescue operations.

The state’s police chief O.P. Singh said National Disaster Response Force teams were reaching the spot apart from the police.
