If you are a Flurys regular, you can’t miss Anjan Dutt sitting by the window with a cigarette, a cup of Darjeeling tea and a faraway look in his eyes. Flurys is where many of Dutt’s filmi ideas brew the best. For him, the Park Street address is more than just a sip-and-bite stop.“I have changed the scripts of my films several times to shoot inside Flurys. This place has played an important role in all my films, be it Bada Din or The Bong Connection,” says Anjan, in between supervising the last scene of Chalo Let’s Go at Flurys.

“Flurys reminds me of the films of Uttam Kumar, where there used to be scenes where he would step out of Olympia and get into his car. I also love the Tolly Club scene in Seemabaddha.... Earlier directors would shoot on locations. I like to shoot in real places. I have never shot inside a studio,” he adds.

Even as the crew members run around getting things in order, Flurys is abuzz with the clank of cutlery and people chatting at neighbouring tables. The distracting smell of fresh doughnuts wafts in as Parambrata and Ritwick try hard to concentrate.

“It’s great fun shooting at Flurys. I’m shooting here for the second time after The Bong Connection. Calcutta, Park Street, Flurys and Anjanda go back a long way,” laughs Parambrata, who plays Sanjay in the film. Sanjay has come to catch up after years with Shekhar (Ritwick), who is a rock star now. “I am shooting here for the first time, but I often drop in with my friends,” pipes up Ritwick.

Dutt joins them for a tea break. “I am very nostalgic about this place. As a kid I would visit Flurys with my grandfather and gorge on chicken sandwiches. Earlier, I used to have breakfast here every day. Later, I would come here with my girlfriend and chat for hours over tea.... Now my son Neel hangs out with his friends here. What I particularly love about this place is its laidback attitude,” smiles the film-maker.
