Trailer: bhoomi

He’s back! Three years after PK, Sanjay Dutt returns to the big screen with Bhoomi, in which he plays a doting dad who takes on the world when his daughter (played by Aditi Rao Hydari) is wronged and humiliated. Directed by Mary Kom man Omung Kumar, the trailer scores for the dad-daughter bond — in an era of 50-plus heroes passing off as 30-plus on screen, it’s refreshing to see Dutt play his age — and the vintage Sanju Baba look and feel... piercing stare to deadly swagger. High on action and emotion, the 2:41 trailer of the September 22 biggie is a YT hit at 10,668,677 thumbs-ups. Another Bhoomi-centric video we loved? Ranbir Kapoor — who plays Dutt in the Rajkumar Hirani-directed biopic — turning up to support the man at the film’s trailer launch in Mumbai.

break-up ho gaya!

Funnyman Zakir Khan articulates the angst — and heartbreak — of every singleton out there who’s faced a break-up. In a stand-up act playing out over 3:28, Zakir begins by saying how the lyrics of sad songs suddenly start resonating with young boys when their hearts are broken. “They will pick up the most cliched lines in a song and say, “‘Bhai, this is the story of my life, this is the story of my life,’” says Zakir, making the audience nod their heads and go LOL. He then goes on to talking about his childhood friend Kuntal who he called up recently after a gap of 10 years. But Kuntal wasn’t willing to talk. Reason? He was on a movie date... in a group! Zakir: “Maine poochha ladke kitne hain group mein?” Kuntal: “Chhe”. Zakir: “Aur ladki?” Kuntal: “Ek!” Click and contribute to the 1,878,279 ROFLs that the video has notched up.

superhero akshay!

He’s turning the box office on its head with his consistent out-of-the-box film picks. Akshay Kumar — whose latest release Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has turned out to be yet another winner — wowed the contestants, audience and millions of viewers sitting at home with a stunt on the sets of the STAR Plus dance show Dance+ 3. The super-fit Khiladi, on the request of a contestant, demonstrated a handstand, holding up easily for more than 40 seconds! The audience — led by judge Remo D’Souza — got to its feet to clap and cheer. And hey, don’t miss AK’s Toilet co-star Bhumi Pednekar’s jaw drop at the 22-second mark. Total wows: 1,706,637... and counting!

bandook meri laila: a gentleman

With less than a week to go for the gunshot, A Gentleman, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez, has been surprisingly low on buzz. But that could change with just one song — Bandook meri laila sees the two hotbods sizzle in the 2:12 number scored by Sachin-Jigar and sung by Ash King, Raftaar and Jigar himself. What we loved? The James Bond look and feel, Sid under a shower and Raftaar’s foot-tapping rap act. The video, that does remind us of the Bang Bang title track with Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, has 402,516 singalongs.

wine with JLAW!

Whatever this girl does is pure gold. Jennifer Lawrence — who turned 27 on August 15 — is a delight in the video where she endorses a competition for charity organisation Omaze, with winners getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to join the Oscar winner for a Calfornia wine tour. The clip opens with Lawrence talking about what the trip entails: “We’ll hang out, drink some wine, talk politics, drink wine, maybe call your ex — maybe we’ll call my ex, who knows!” she laughs. The fun starts when she gets down to proving that she can tell between the review for a bottle of wine and the review of one of her movies. Sample: JLaw reads out a cue card that says, “Full-bodied, strongly grounded, simply sensational.” Her reaction? “I hope that’s the review for a bottle of Cabernet and not my breasts!” Turns out it’s something someone wrote for her performance in Joy! Fifth Harmony: Angel

Now down to a quartet — after Camila Cabello left last year — the four angels of Fifth Harmony (Ally Brooke Hernandez, Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui and Normani Kordei) get all hot and haughty in the video to the Skrillex-produced track which has them “tormenting the dreams of someone who wronged them”. 8,462,575 views and counting.

Bruno Mars: Versace on the Floor

Only a wall separates Spider-Man: Homecoming actress Zendaya and Bruno Mars in this fabulous glamorous video to Versace On The Floor. The two are neighbours who exchange flirty glances before hitting their respective pads. Sporting a glittering mini dress, Zendaya is romanced while Bruno plays the piano and sings I unzip the back to watch it fall/ While I kiss your neck and shoulders. And the words are put into action telekinetically until her mini is seen lying on the floor and a knock is heard on the door. 12,947,649 ooh-la-las!

Care for an emoji domain name?

How cool would it be to have a website address like, say,  as      .to or      .to? Uh, emoji as domain name?! Yes, that’s very much possible. First, visit      .to (or key in http://xn--f28h.to/). We suggest you use Firefox browser to do this. Select the emoji domain name you want to register... and pay. Of course, the popular ones — smiley with sunglass, punch, thumbs up/down and so on — are taken but you can have combinations of emojis as domain name. If you are wondering if the emoji combination you are thinking of is taken, head to GoDaddy’s search engine                     or https://xn--i-7iq.ws/#wtf. It’s a very cool way to win over millennials, something Coca-Cola Puerto Rico had tried sometime ago. Pizza and beer are taken but don’t let steam engine, waves or open road slip away!

All stitched up

Snapchat’s latest feature — Crowd Surf — can be a game changer for the music industry. Using artificial intelligence, the app is now able to create a seamless extended video of big events, especially concerts. It takes individual video clips from various users and combines them to stich one seamless video that offers multiple perspectives. The company tested the feature out at Lorde’s recent performance in San Francisco. Users can choose the angle they’d like to watch the concert from and see more than 10 seconds of continuous footage. The feature, which was first spotted by news portal Mashable, combined clips while Lorde was performing Green Light and the results are amazing. Though we are not sure when the feature will be rolled out outside the US, Snapchat has told Tech Radar: “It is set to be available at more public events in the future including concerts and speeches, but will require tons of people shooting and submitting Snaps from the same moment.” If successful, it will be a big win against Instagram.

FB’s design tweaks

Facebook’s small design tweaks to its News Feed will go a long way because it translates into a cleaner look. The blue accents and headers across much of the interface is gone. The comment threads on posts now appear more like conversations, especially on Messenger. And, like on Twitter, the profile pictures now appear within circles and icons, comment, share and Like buttons look bolder but simpler. Since the rollout is underway, your app may take a few days to reflect the updates.

Jimmy Tangree on making a pledge

It was a very exciting week as 91.9 Friends FM celebrated Independence Day by living up to our “freedom from hunger” pledge. We took 15 underprivileged  children out for lunch. It was, of course, a small gesture but it meant a lot. If a family cooks an extra meal every day and gives it to one underprivileged child in his or her locality, imagine  how many families can be helped. The idea is to come together and do our bit to bring about a change. Are you with us?
Meanwhile, one of the finest global radio shows will be launched on Sunday with DJ Goldierocks, British Council: The Selector Radio, exclusively in India on 91.9 Friends FM, playing out 8pm to 9pm.
