A red sari, matchy bindi, loose wavy hair and kohl-lined eyes, paired with gold ornaments and that dazzling smile — Vidya Balan looked every bit a Bengali beauty as she shot for a Senco Gold & Diamonds TV commercial to be aired in Calcutta.
A total of four TVCs were shot — for Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Calcutta — by Tumhari Sulu director Suresh Triveni at Kandivali, Mumbai.
Vidya, the ambassador for the jewellery brand from Calcutta, looked at ease in her Bengali character, having started her film journey from the city with the Bengali film Bhalo Theko, directed by Goutam Halder.

“Senco is a national brand with its roots in Bengal and I think that’s true of me also! Aami mon theke Bangali and a national actor… and someone was telling me, I can be placed anywhere in the country and still look like I belong to that place. And I feel that’s a blessing… it’s probably because of the structure of my face, or maybe because I am really, really very Indian,” Vidya told t2. The TVCs are being streamed on Senco Gold & Diamonds’ YouTube channel.
Vidya’s faves
From the jewellery you wear, which pieces do you like?
I love gold jewellery; I love traditional, temple jewellery from the south. It really depends on what I am wearing and what goes with it. I am thrilled about these four TV commercials because I will be dressed differently.
On regular days and when you are not shooting, what is your choice of jewellery?
I invariably wear silver because I love silver. As an actor, I can’t be wearing anything because I have to come and take it off before shooting. I love silver jhumkas, and I can wear big jhumkas! On a regular basis, it goes with your pants. I feel really simple diamond studs go with everything, so that’s the other favourite. I don’t wear neckpieces that often.
