Number 13 may prove to be lucky for national chain 10 Downing Street. For their 13th outlet is the first one for Calcutta and the city has already taken to it, even before it has acquired a liquor licence.
t2 checks out the English-style pub...
The ground floor is divided into the bar, the library and the dance floor. “During the day the library is a good place to sit and browse through a book, while the same space can be turned into a private party section at night. In a group not everyone enjoys dancing, so we have given equal attention to seating arrangements,” said Mohit Agarwal and Rajesh Agarwal, directors of the Calcutta franchise of 10 Downing Street.
The highlight is the 24ftx15ft island bar, made of brass. Revolving high chairs (like the ones in a barber’s shop) and “handmade coloured tiles from Mumbai” lend a vintage vibe. “Keeping in sync with the name, we wanted the decor to have an English pub feel, so we have used a lot of wood and cosy seating sections,” said Mohit.
A few steps away from RDB Cinemas, the number 10 shines bright at the entrance to 10 Downing Street — the national pub chain that has got itself a Calcutta address, in Salt Lake Sector V.
Wooden flooring, a fancy bar and plush couches to sink in — the mezzanine has a luxe, warm feel (because of the heater that looks like a fireplace). “If you do not like yelling out to your friend sitting next to you, because of the jarring pub music, this is the place for you!” said Mohit.
Spot the balcony inside the pub! The space is reserved for live acts like stand-up comedy and bands. In the pipeline is a roster that reads Vintage Monday, Tuesday Rock, Ladies Night Wednesday, Thursday Karaoke, Retro Friday, Club Saturday and Bolly Sunday. “We are trying to make each day of the week interesting. On Vintage Monday, guests between 40 and 60 years will get a discount same as their age on the bill. But it will apply only to the oldest member in each group,” said DJ Akash, director of music and events at 10 Downing Street.
