GOOGLE

The ad which got tears to my eyes is the Google ad (which shows two friends from across the borders being reunited through Google and grandchildren!). Frankly, after watching the ad during the interval, for a large part of Ashchorjyo Prodeep’s second half, I was a little lost. My mom kept asking me, ‘Are you okay?’ It is such a sensitive ad.

We hardly get time to visit our grandparents, forget about chatting with them and asking them about their friends. I felt personally connected to the ad…. Now I wish I could have gone and spent some more time with them when they were there. That’s something I regret.

It’s beautiful how they have shot the close-ups. The song adds to the feel. It is so emotional. It is very simple, but it just touches your heart.

I was very close to my grandparents. I lost my paternal grandmother this year when I was away shooting for Mishawr Rawhoshyo. I got to know after two days because we were filming the desert scenes and there was no network. My paternal grandfather also had a long, white beard, like the man from Pakistan. So, I could connect with that too. The old man from Pakistan also had light eyes and I have got my eyes from my paternal grandfather. So, that man looks similar to my grandfather. So, I got emotionally connected.

Now, that ad is an added incentive when I am at the theatre.

TANISHQ

I think there was a huge roar about the Tanishq ad, which I thought was a huge step. They showed what contemporary India is all about… a dusky bride and a single mother. It was quite a bold step for the company because the agencies are quite conscious about their clientele and who they are catering to. Today one out of every 10 women is raising a child on her own and is a working mother. The last bit… where her (the bride played by Priyanka Bose) little daughter asks if she can call him (the groom played by Kavi Shastri) dad, was just wow. You welcome something new and celebrate life…

Vodafone

Another very true-to-life ad is the Vodafone ad (starring Do Dooni Chaar’s feisty Aditi ‘Payal’ Vasudev). I love the mood of the ad and also the jingle… it is so you… ‘my life’s an open book, anyone can take a look’. I had thought of jotting it down. She is what she is, but she can change. That feel is also there. I think that is very close to reality. The youngsters are so frank these days… they show the relationship status changing. All of that is so real.

These ads are sensitive and real and closer to our roots. And that’s why I love them!

whip it!

Pantene shatters many stereotypes in a single ad that’s become a talking point in the virtual world. Focusing on men vs women at the workplace, the ad smartly hints at the different labels they are saddled with: a man is a boss, while a woman is bossy; he is persuasive while she is pushy; he’s dedicated, she’s selfish; he’s smooth, she’s a show-off.

The sign-off — ‘Don’t let labels hold you back. Be strong and shine. #Whip it’ — drives the point home perfectly. Watch the winner at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOjNcZvwjxI.
