Dragon Ball Super, the sequel to our childhood favourite show Dragon Ball Z, has come to an end and we, the t2 Campus Team, are heartbroken. Super first aired in 2015 and had us really excited because it was written and drawn by Akira Toriyama himself and was not a fan-based spinoff. The new style of animation threw us off a little bit, but we were soon hooked by the storyline and all the new powers that were introduced in the sequel. The story starts with Goten and Trunks still young, and Pan still a baby, which is right where we left off at the end of Dragon Ball Z. Super retained the original’s humour and epic fight scenes, while new characters, fresh design of old characters and incredible animation took the anime series to a whole new level. While we wait anxiously for news of another sequel, we share some of our favourite moments from the show that we know we will keep watching, over and over.
Ultra Instinct
The power that Goku attains literally translates to “Secret of Selfishness” from the Japanese term “Migatte no Gokui”. This technique comes from a very rare and highly advanced mental state, and is notorious among the gods for being exceptionally difficult to master. Goku attains a transformation that allows him to use the defensive aspect of Ultra Instinct during the Tournament of Power. He later gains its offensive properties and full power.
Goku’s Spirit Bomb on Jiren
The move, also termed Universe 7’s Spirit Bomb, was one of the coolest by Goku in the entire series. Realising that even Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken (one of the powered-up forms of Goku) was no match for Jiren, Goku decides to use his trump card, The Spirit Bomb. With help from all of Team Universe 7 (including Frieza, surprisingly), except for Vegeta, Goku prepares a giant Spirit Bomb using the energy donated by the team. Though his attack was unsuccessful, being struck by the Universe 7’s Spirit Bomb enabled Goku to break through into his deeper potential, achieving the Ultra Instinct state.
Golden Frieza
This is the ultimate evolution of the Frieza race, and was first created and named by Frieza himself. This transformation is achieved through vigorous training methods that result from his obsessive need for revenge against Goku. Golden Frieza is the result of Frieza purposefully training for the first time in his life. Unlike the other forms that can be used constantly and are power-suppressing, this form is an acquired, non-permanent transformation used to power up. We loved the reappearance of Frieza in the Super series and adored the nostalgia in his saga too.
Gohan vs Goku
Gohan regaining his Ultimate Form powers and pushing beyond it was one of the most glorious moments in the series. Gohan wanted to test his limits against Goku at his best. This was reminiscent of when Goku and Gohan trained during the Cell Games in Dragon Ball Z. In one scene, Gohan demanded that Goku not hold back during their training if he wanted to get stronger and as fans we were so glad that Gohan was back to fighting as a part of the team.
Vegeta’s New Form
In the later episodes of Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta obtained a new form — a form that is ‘beyond Super Saiyan Blue’ and yet to be given a proper name. But we loved the sparklines to his aura. We are still speculating whether it was a variation of the Ultra Instinct or a new form altogether. Even though the manga specified it as the ‘Mastered Super Saiyan Blue’, the anime never clearly mentioned what it was.
Android 17’s Final Wish
Being one of the final Z warriors to survive the Tournament of Power, Android 17 decided to sacrifice his dream wish of getting a spaceship to save Vegeta and Goku from Jiren. He self-destructed to defend his teammates from Jiren’s attack. Battling together with Goku and his friends, he appreciated the importance of teamwork and trust. Definitely one of the most heartbreaking decisions in the final two episodes.
Trunks Defeating Zamasu
Everything related to Trunks’ saga was outstanding, with the perfect mix of action, humour, drama, multiple fights and dynamics. Future Trunks showed the greatest display of power by killing Zamasu, who was supposedly immortal. This led to many theories saying Future Trunks might actually be stronger than Goku and Vegeta, but we can never be sure.
Goku vs Vegeta Last Fight
A nod to the first fight between our most beloved characters, it was an ideal ending to Super. We see Goku and Vegeta getting ready to go at each other again and promising that they can become even stronger than what they are, with Vegeta assuring Goku there are no limits to the powers of a Saiyan. The cliffhanger ending makes us wonder if there will be another sequel.
