A teal strap top and white ankle-length skinny trousers come together for a cool, casual day look. A neon watch, a printed scarf (both from Promod), hassle-free nude wedges (Mango) and a chic military-inspired bag (stylist’s own) make the style story colourful. With hair tied back and in oversized sunnies, Parno steps out to stun the sun.

What to team with a strap top

1 Shrugs or summer jackets. Whether a teensy shrug that covers your shoulders and ends above the waist, or a sexy summer blazer — the trick is to contrast. It does great things for your body proportions and besides, you are doing the trendy colour blocking.

2 Scarves, stoles and dupattas. Think floral, animal or Aztec prints. If a shrug feels too much for a sultry afternoon, throw on a happy scarf. When wrapped well, it acts as sun protection.

3 Accessories. Don’t be afraid to dress up your strappies. Belts — broad or skinny, patent or blingy — are big. Statement pieces, multiple chains and charms, colourful beads and baubles work well for the neck. Want to breathe easy? Stack up bangles and cuffs or just clip on earrings. And don’t forget a great mani to flaunt those supersized rings.

Get it right

1 The bra must be moulded or seamless, and preferably strapless. Flaunting colourful bra straps is so last season. Transparent straps are way too tacky.

2 Girls with broad shoulders can go for halter-style strap tops.

3 For basic colours, buy branded tops. They look and fit better.

4 Underarms should be clean and smooth. Otherwise, just wear a T-shirt!

5 Keep the length. Don’t get a cropped top, unless of course your stomach is as flat as Deepika Padukone!

Parno jazzes up the same strap top for a glam night out, with a sheer thigh-high slit skirt (stylist’s own) contrasted with hot pink heels (Mango). She goes all-gold with the accessories. A red mouth and wavy hair add to the sexy vintage look.

Expert tips

The most important thing is to have fuzz-free legs! Wax or shave as often as necessary. One must always have well-moisturised legs — cracks and dry skin are a turn-off. Pedicures should be a part of the monthly beauty regimen. If you’re a victim of uneven skin tone and dark spots, cream-based concealers are a must. Other than that, fake a tan or two with bronzing powder — it catches the contours of the muscles and adds a touch of healthy sheen.

Daily 30-minute workouts (at home or the gym) will keep your legs toned. Squats, step-ups and lunges (forward and back-step) are the basic movements that shape up your glutes, hamstrings and quadriceps. Abduction adduction, that includes side leg raises and donkey kicks, strengthens your hips and outer thighs. The cardiovascular element can come from walking or cycling. And give dance a chance — it’s simple and fun! Play some music and rock to the beat.

Shorts can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion. For a night out, I like wearing bright, high-waisted shorts with a basic tank top and glam it up with some pop accessories and high heels. A day-out with friends calls for casual denims and a dressy blouse.

Shorts are a great way to beat the heat. I live in my overused, ripped, white denim pair. They rock with loose or fitted shirts and tees. Forever New and Guess are good shop stops.
