How did you feel at the music launch of your very first film as a producer?
It was very special. I have witnessed many music launches, but for the first time we made the posters ourselves, decided who should be the music director and what should be the cover of the CD. All the decisions have been taken by us. The same is the case with the film. We are really scared, but also confident. As for the music, I love the songs Twist and Ahun ahun from the film.
A lot has been said about whether Kareena Kapoor should have played the lead in Love Aaj Kal. Having completed the film, what is your impression of Deepika Padukone?
People learn so fast these days! In my first 10 films, I was utter rubbish. In her third film, Deepika is so good. She has delivered a very fine performance.
The promos show a kiss between Deepika and you...
It was the first kiss in the movie. It was Imtiaz’s vision of dealing with the subject of a couple getting intimate for the first time. It is cute, it is fun, it is beautifully handled by Imtiaz.
The film speaks about love once again. What will be new in the film?
The conflict between the couple is new. The way Imtiaz has written the dialogues is very different. A modern girl has so many options. She makes career decisions. There’s more equality in the relationship, which makes it much more difficult to fit the model of relationships in the past where women were more docile.
What was the most difficult part of playing a Sardar?
It was difficult to make phone calls... not joking, it was. We are a very mature production house and we took the utmost care while playing Sardars. Every actor who was playing a Sardar was strictly instructed not to smoke with the turbans on... they should respect the turban.
Love Aaj Kal is said to be a rip-off of the Taiwanese film Three Times...
It’s awful when you say that because it is an original script and beautifully written. I think it is nice to have influences. Kurosawa must have been inspired by Shakespeare; there’s nothing wrong with it. But Love Aaj Kal is an original script.
Soha is hosting a show on TV. Will you be a part of the show?
She has not invited me yet. She never does. If she calls, I will definitely go. I’m not shooting for any film in the next three months.
