The first look of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Ramayana dropped on Thursday, leaving fans disappointed with the visual effects, CGI and alleged use of AI.
Released on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, the makers’ decision to withhold Sunny Deol’s first look as Hanuman further added to the criticism.
A user on X criticised the teaser for its overuse of CGI and said Ranbir Kapoor did not look convincing as Lord Ram. The netizen also said that Aditya Dhar would be a better choice to direct such stories.
An X user noted that the Ramayana teaser did not live up to the hype, slamming the VFX and ‘obvious’ AI use. Although some visuals of Ranbir were solid, the netizen said that the teaser still felt lacking.
“Still think, closer to release, we will get better visuals but today's teaser was a letdown for all hype,” tweeted another X user.
Disappointed with the missing glimpse of Hanuman, an X user remarked that it should have been included on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.
Ramayana also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and KGF star Yash as Ravana.
“I am sure people will say they didn’t see Hanuman ji and Ravan glimpse. Even Sita maa glimpse also missing. At least today on Hanuman Jayanti they should show Bajrang Bali glimpse (sic),” wrote another user on X.
The script for Ramayana is written by Namit Malhotra in collaboration with Shridhar Raghavan. The film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, known for his films Dangal and Chhichhore.
A social media user said the Ramayana teaser made them appreciate S.S. Rajamouli even more, noting that while budgets can boost scale, creating a world with real grandeur and impact is a skill only he truly masters.
“Just 20 secs is much more Grandeur visual than Ramayana teaser. This is why Rajamouli is the best director of this country. #Ramayana teaser is a big disappointment,” remarked another X user.
Ramayana will be released in two installments, with the first part hitting screens on Diwali this year and the second part slated for a release on Diwali 2027.
Oscar winning-composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman have scored the music for the upcoming film. Pankaj Kumar has served as the film’s cinematographer.
