TT Bureau Published 26.10.16, 12:00 AM

What: India Speed Week 2016, in association with t2

When: December 9, 10 and 11

Where: Behala Flying Club

What to expect: If you feel the thrill watching the rpm climb to insane heights, if you like the air whipping a frenzy on your face, if pressing the metal to the floor gives you an epinephrine rush and you want to do all of these in a legit manner, be there at the Behala Flying Club this December.

Participate, witness and soak in the adrenaline-soaring drag races plus a host of adventure sports, auto expos, off-roading tracks, music concerts, curated food and liquor zones, the works ….

Who can take part? Open to all individual and team participants with wheels, be it two or four. So if you have a Nano or a Ferrari, you are eligible, provided your wheels have the basic safety features stipulated by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the governing body.

Organiser speak: “There will be two quarter-mile race tracks on the airstrip. We see a lot of drag racing in Rajarhat, which is illegal. Here it will be held in a controlled environment with safety aspects in place,” said Rongom Tagore Mukerji, race manager of ISW 2016, and director of Elite Octane Inc.

“It’s the first time that a drag event is being held on an airstrip in India,” claimed Amit Modi, the Speed Baron of India Speed Week, 2016.

“There will be 400 to 450 races per day,” said Mukerji, and the prize money will be handsome, promised Modi.
Categories: There will be about 25 categories, depending on the number of entries as well as on the engine size and modifications of the vehicle. So a Nano will compete not against a Ferrari but with another Nano or anything with a similar engine size and power.

Starting category for bikes: 150cc

Starting category for cars: 800cc

Speed architects: Curating the event will be scenographer Swarup Dutta and Nil of Dev R Nil. Dutta promises an “experiential space” that will not just have the supercars but also the Nanos and Marutis. “It will be an inclusive event,” he said.

Star power: Expect a strong Bolly-Tolly contingent including John Abraham, Jackie Shroff, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Raima Sen, Koel Mallick and Nusrat Jahan upping the glamour quotient. Football hero Bhaichung Bhutia will also add his kick to the event. “The final day will have the Award Nite with Anil Kapoor giving away the prizes,” said Modi.

Speed agents: Gautam Bhimani, Sonika Chauhan and Archana Vijaya promise to the keep the audience in high spirits as will the curated food and liquor zones.
