The first thing I have in the morning: Is a glass of warm water and cup of milky tea. I have cereal and wheat flakes for breakfast. I would love to have a big English breakfast, but you can’t indulge in such a heavy breakfast so early in the morning. I make excellent scrambled eggs.
My lunch: While shooting, I prefer to carry my lunch. I am very particular about my food, because the food on the sets may not be according to my taste. I carry sada khaana like varan, one green vegetable, a salad or steamed chicken. On an outdoor shoot, a dosa is the safest thing to eat. I love dosas, especially for lunch.
My favourite vegetables: I love palak and bhindi.
My favourite non-vegetarian fare: I am fond of eating chicken and mustard fish. My cook makes excellent mutton dishes.
My evening snack: Digestive biscuits and fruits.
My favourite fruits: I am always yelling for papaya. I also like sitaphal a lot. I am very fond of most fruits.
My mouth waters at the thought of: Junk food. I love bhel-puri and vada-pav. I love the sandwich and paani puri from roadside vendors.
I am excited about eating: Pizzas. When Kajol is in town, we generally freak out on pizzas. My sister and I are both major pizza freaks. When Kajol was pregnant, she was not allowed to eat pizzas, so she would order it and I would eat it. We accompany it with fabulous salads, with dressing made without eggs and therefore really low in cholesterol and calories.
Eating out: I am a restaurant person completely, I am always eating out. I give preference to good food rather than ambience while dining out.
My favourite desserts: I dig rasmalai. And any kind of ice cream is fine by me. I relish Indian chocolates.
A childhood memory associated with food: Since mom was a working mother, I would pack my own lunch for school. Since I have a sweet tooth, my maid would pack chini ka paratha for me sometimes.
My culinary abilities: When I was really young, my great-grandmother taught me how to make chapatis. But my chapatis never turned out round and I have not yet perfected the art. My great-grandmother would sit and order everyone around!
Cooks in the family: My mom (actress Tanuja) makes very good bombilcha kalvan, Maharashtrian style. She is the best cook ever. Kajol has improved as a cook now after she made a lot of effort. She makes pretty good salads. She had enough teachers in our family. Mom is a good cook and so is her mom-in-law, who makes fabulous dal pakwan and paya.
My idea of a romantic meal: I would opt for a place that has close and comfortable seating, so that you don’t have to yell at each other. A candlelight dinner would be ideal; and I would lay a lot of emphasis on the food.
