Foot-tapper Then, Chartbuster Now. T2 Tunes Into Some Old Bolly Hits That Have Been Given A New Thumping Groove Published 24.07.13, 12:00 AM

Tayyab Ali

Then: Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)

Now: Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara! (2013)

Remember the song where Rishi Kapoor teases Neetu Singh’s on-screen father (played by Mukri) in Amar Akbar Anthony and sings Tayyab Ali pyaar ka dushman haye haye in the Manmohan Desai blockbuster? Javed Ali belts out the Mohd Rafi number in Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai sequel with Imran Khan and Sonakshi Sinha doing all the hip-shaking in a Mumbai chawl.

Bachna Ae Haseeno

Then: Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977)

Now: Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008)

If the dad — dressed in white, playing a trumpet — made the song a rage, his son gave it a GenY spin 31 years later. Rishi Kapoor’s chartbuster from Hum Kisise Kum Naheen was reworked as the title track of Ranbir’s Casanova film, produced by Yash Raj. Music men Vishal-Shekhar let it rip with a rap interlude. Some more nostalgia? Sumit Kumar stepped in to sing the number originally sung by baba Kishore.

Dum Maaro Dum

Then: Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971)

Now: Dum Maaro Dum (2011)

The original was addictive but the recreation sounded crass. The image of Zeenat Aman sensuously swaying to Asha Bhosle’s voice in the Dev Anand film was replaced by Deepika Padukone prancing suggestively to the Pritam number. The new version, sung by Anushka Manchanda, had an edgy feel but the lyrics — Oonche se ooncha banda/potty pe baithe nanga — deserved to be flushed out.

disco deewane

Then: Title song from Nazia/Zoheb Hassan’s pop album (1981)

Now: Student of the Year (The disco song; 2012)

The prom song of the Karan Johar-directed Student of the Year is a revamped version of the 1981 superhit that made the brother-sister duo a household name. While the original stood out for its melody and Nazia’s fresh vocals, the newbie sung by Vishal Dadlani, Sunidhi Chauhan and Benny Dayal is whatafun! The good thing? The disco song — featuring newcomers Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra with a bubbly special appearance by Kajol — retained parts of the original.

Dhak Dhak Karne Laga

Then: Beta (1992)

Now: Nautanki Saala! (2013)

A sexy Madhuri Dixit in an orange number sent the Celsius soaring with heaving bosom and a sexy back in the Indra Kumar-directed film. A copy of the Ilayaraja number Abbani teeyani debba, Dhak dhak was recreated earlier this year in the Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Nautanki Saala! And though newcomers Gaelyn Mendonca, Evelyn Sharma and Pooja Salvi desperately tried to beat Madhuri, they failed... miserably. The film flopped, the song lasted a little longer.

Laila Laila

Then: Qurbani (1980)

Now: Chalo Dilli (2011)

Who can forget a red-hot Zeenat Aman turning it on as Laila in Qurbani with Feroz Khan. Scored by Kalyanji-Anandji, Laila Laila was sung by Kanchan and became a smash-hit. Thirty one years later, the number relied on Yana Gupta’s oomph in an item number from Chalo Dilli. Sung by Calcutta girl June Banerjee, the song was a foot-tapper but it failed to recreate that sensuous magic.

Na jaane kahan se

Then: ChaalBaaz (1989)

Now: I, Me Aur Main (2013)

Sridevi brought soul and spunk to the Kavita Krishnamurthy-Amit Kumar number from ChaalBaaz, acting drunk and dancing in a raincoat with Sunny Deol for company. Box-office dud I, Me Aur Main may have come and gone, but the only buzz was created by the reworked version of the original, sung by Neeraj Shridhar and Anushka Manchanda. While the original scored on melody and beat, the new version — with Chitrangda Singh and Prachi Desai vying for John Abraham — has a hip hop feel and is a big hit on the dance floor.

Dama Dam Mast kalandar

Then: Dilan De Saude (1969)

Now: David and D-Day (2013)

The soulful Sufi song has been, over the years, sung by many singers –– Noor Jehan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen and Runa Laila to name a few. One of the popular versions (by Noor Jehan) can be found in the Pakistani film Dilan De Saude. This year two Bollywood films have featured it — Rekha Bhardwaj brought soul and sur to her qawwali-rock-folk version in David and Mika’s done the trick in D-Day.

apni toh jaise taise

Then: Laawaris (1981)

Now: Housefull (Aapka kya hoga; 2010)

Amitabh Bachchan, tambourine in hand, grooved to the hit Kishore Kumar number. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy reinvented the number in Sajid Khan’s Housefull with Mika, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shankar Mahadevan... all playing to Jacqueline Fernandez’s sexy moves. The number initially ran into trouble with the Laawaris producers (director Prakash Mehra’s sons). But that’s all water under the bridge.
