Why is a silk mekhela sador always picked for an extravagant evening? What about the other fabrics? Aren’t they sophisticated enough? For long, this misconception about mekhela sador has prevailed and women mainly prefer mulberry or muga or tassar silk for a special event.

Sure they look gorgeous but summer can play spoilsport and turn it into a hot, sweaty and messy affair. Silk is the last thing one needs to cover up in when temperatures shoot up to close to 40 degrees Celsius.

So breaking the barriers, Kankana Gogoi Konwar went ahead to design something unique and fresh this summer. She calls it the New Summer Collection under her label SilkSouk.

Apart from the usual mulberries and mugas, the Guwahati-based designer also created gorgeous mekhela sador in kesa paat, nuni paat, cotton and refined organic eri.

Not following the stereotype where kesa paat is only worn in shade of whites, Kankana came up with a vibrant palette for her silhouettes.

“Change is inevitable and it’s time now we bring these fabulous fabrics into the spotlight. Silk is difficult to wear, so I wanted to create a collection, which was perfect for the heat. By emphasising lightweight clothes and simple designing, I added a twist to it with vibrant colours,” she said.

Intrigued by what the collection is going to be like, t2 paid a visit at her boutique SilkSouk in Guwahati. Here’s a sneak peek into her New Summer Collection.

Cotton Game: It’s easy to mistake the model to be wearing a mulberry silk mekhela sador. She isn’t though. It’s a cotton mekhela sador done in a gorgeous way. To prove her point about cotton, Kankana has strategically placed the model beside two mannequins wearing mulberry silk doing a colour play

Old is Gold: For Muga it’s rightly said, old is gold. The golden fabric is the most sought after one. Even the heat fails to make a fashionista say no to a lightweight muga.

The deal becomes increasingly difficult to break when the old pattern of climbers is added on the borders and the body is kept plain. Another smart thing to do was instead of using the usual size of sador, Kankana opted for a riha (smaller form of sador) to make the wearer feel comfortable

Plain and simple: It’s a plain and simple piece of mulberry silk mekhela sador for those who won’t have it any other way. It’s the colour palette, which does the actual trick. The base colour, peach, adds a summery touch where different shades of blue, royal and turquoise are mixed making it all lively and spunky for both a day and an evening affair

Can’t Say no To A Sari: A mulberry silk sari is the next must-have for your wardrobe, if being traditional is your thing. Though silk is not what you would prefer in summer, Kankana has constructed this sari in a way you can’t say no to. The light work spread out only on the pallu and the pleated area gives a sober feel to the garment

Shades of grey: One look and the curious eyes would pierce in thinking what the fabric is. Kesa paat. That’s how gorgeous the fabric can look, if you add the right bit of colour and work it up with light designs. The mulberry silk mekhela and kesa paat sador, both in shades of grey escalates the sophistication quotient

Mix and Match: It’s all about mix and match in pink to bring in freshness this summer. Tassar silk and nuni paat are blended, giving a different look to the garment. What makes it more wearable is the subtle miri design on the border

Little bit of everything: This mekhela sador has a little bit of everything to beat the heat. Organic eri sador, tassar silk mekhela and a cotton blouse. Minimal work in the body makes
it look appealing

The Stunner: Hard to believe this is kesa paat. All you need to do is wear this gorgeous purple mekhela sador correctly, and you are surely going to be the stunner in the room
