Why: Violated a DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol) probation in 2007.

Time in jail: Sentenced to 45 days, but stayed in her prison facility for only three nights. Spent the rest of the term under “home confinement”.

Famous words after: “I just felt like this was a new beginning for me, just being in jail, and I just used it as a journey to figure out myself and who I am and what I want to do.”

On July 17, 2010 Hilton was detained and released after being caught in possession of cannabis at Figari airport, Corsica.

NICOLE RICHIE

Why: In 2006, singer Lionel Richie’s adopted daughter and Paris Hilton’s best friend was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and Vicodin.

Time in jail: Sentenced to four days, but stayed in jail for only 82 minutes. Reason? The prison was “overcrowded”!

Famous words after: “This year has been full of lessons learned and soul searching and realising I’m an adult. It’s time to take responsibility and not take the easy way out.”

ROBERT DOWNEY JR

Why: From 1996 to 2003, Downey was arrested numerous times on substance abuse charges.

Time in jail: Over a period of seven years, the Iron Man actor cumulatively spent close to a year-and-a-half in detention, prison and treatment facility combined.

Famous words after: “When the [prison] door clicks shut, then you are safe... You are actually in the safest place on earth. Safe from the intruders.”

KIEFER SUTHERLAND

Why: Yet another DUI probation violation. The 24 star has, however, faced arrest several times — for drug abuse, nightclub brawls and even for head-butting — Zidane style — fashion designer Jack McCollough at a public event in 2009.

Time in jail: 48 days in mid-2007.

Famous words after: “I was so cross with myself, it was my way of teaching myself a lesson.”

 

MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ

Why: Like Hilton and Richie, the Lost star was jailed for violating a DUI probation in 2008.

Time in jail: Sentenced to 180 days, but served only 18.

MEL GIBSON

Why: Racism to sexism, domestic violence to drunken driving, this is one Holly celeb perpetually on the wrong side of the law. The Braveheart’s latest? He is said to be facing arrest for abusing estranged girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

Time in jail: Arrested several times, but never spent time in prison.

Gibson and Grigorieva are now engaged in a bitter custody battle for their eight-month-old daughter Lucia. As the case gets murkier by the day, the Oscar-winning actor-director is losing support within his fraternity — Leonardo DiCaprio has just pulled out of a Gibson film!

SEAN PENN

Why: Probation violations including reckless driving and assault. He was also arrested for hanging a paparazzo by his ankles from the ninth-floor balcony of his hotel room!

Time in jail: Sentenced to 60 days in mid-1987, of which he served 33 days.

Famous words after: “The whole idea that I was in jail was silly!”
