We’re here to tell you what we mean
We’re here to sing and grow our hair
So come in colours, we’ll see you there.
(from the Magic Wallrush IV invite on Facebook)
A little pandal cradling the bend of the run-down walls of the now-closed T3 on Park Street, some masks, oversized glasses, aviators, pop art and paintings so you “watch the walls” is what Magic Wallrush IV — The Masquerade — was all about. “The political parties do not own our walls; we’ll paint them on our own,” said their invite and so they did on September 12, from 11am to 8pm.
If you got past the party streamers and khoi bags or even the goofy garbs and crazy colours of the participants, there was an exciting gallery with good artwork up for grabs. Calcutta, its moods, people and places and goddess Durga were recurring images. Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar or a Chinese labourer also found place as inspiration. Quirk galore in digital prints of pop and graphic arts, patachitra-inspired paintings, postcards, photographs, chhau mask on canvas, tees with Sahaj Path and Abol Tabol illustrations and lampshades made out of old saris.
There were other attractions like tarot card reading, live jamming sessions and a cleanliness drive. Lights went out and candles came on as the bauls took over.
