This year’s edition of the annual Golden Globes Awards, which honour the best in film and television, was a hugely scaled-back event where the winners were announced in a 90-minute private ceremony in Los Angeles, which saw no guests in attendance and wasn’t livestreamed or televised. While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that organises the Golden Globes, insisted that it was a low-key event because of the resurgence of the pandemic, a large part of Hollywood boycotting the event — amid calls of corruption and lack of diversity — had a lot to do with it. Nevertheless, some richly deserving nominees were awarded and at least one winner made history.

Year of the Dog

Jane Campion, returning to direct a film after 12 years, won the award for Best Director — Motion Picture for her much-feted Western psychological drama that touches upon themes of love, grief, resentment, jealousy and sexuality. The Power of the Dog, which also saw Campion take home the prestigious Silver Bear at the Venice International Film Festival last year, won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Kodi Smit-McPhee.

FAMILY TIES

It was a big night for Succession, with the TV series — that already has nine Primetime Emmys — winning three out of its five nods at the Globes. While Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Kendall Roy saw him earn the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama, the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role on
Television went to Sarah Snook.

CREATING HISTORY

Becoming the first trans woman to win a Golden Globe award, Mj Rodriguez made history with her win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama for Pose, edging out the likes of Elisabeth Moss and Jennifer Aniston. “This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals,” Rodriguez wrote on Instagram shortly after the win.
Nicole Kidman snagged her fifth Golden Globe, winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama for Being the Ricardos. Maestro Hans Zimmer took home his third for his score in Dune.

SONG ’n’ DANCE

Auteur Steven Spielberg’s take on the classic West Side Story also romped home with a couple of honours. Described by critics as “sweeping”, “dazzling” and “wildly entertaining”, the musical won Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for Rachel Zegler. Ariana DeBose was honoured for her scintillating act with Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.
