Ogo Bodhu Sundari — “a tribute to and not a remake of the Uttam Kumar film,” as main man Babul Supriyo had said — might have come out of the copyright legal tangle unscathed but the much-hyped comedy is nothing to write home about.

The plot: Babul is Uttam Kumar Chatterjee, a huge fan of Uttam Kumar named after the screen legend by his star-struck parents. Uttam is in a bit of a marital crisis as his wife Sucharita (Sreelekha) has left him following a misunderstanding. To beat the blues, Uttam’s brother-in-law takes him on a holiday to Shantiniketan where the two run into the dusky tribal girl Phoolmani (Monami). From there on, the similarities with the original Ogo Bodhu start popping up.

Phoolmani hides in Uttam’s car and comes to Calcutta. Just when Uttam is about to throw her out of his house, the brother-in-law has the brilliant brainwave to apply the original Ogo Bodhu plot in real life to spice things up.

So, Phoolmani slips into Moushumi Chatterjee’s slippers and creates more misunderstandings between husband and wife. She also takes time out to prance around trees with the brother-in-law. And to make the whole exercise look novel, director Sunanda Mitra brings in a whole lot of twists and turns which only create more confusion. He even squeezes in a lesbian marriage between two social activists while you keep wondering why!

The three songs lifted from the Uttam Kumar-starrer — Ei toh jibon, Nari charitra and Tui joto phool dishna kine — stay, thanks to the out-of-court settlement.

Thumbs up: Monami looks pretty and also gets her tribal act right.

Thumbs down: The film is meant to be a comedy but all the comic scenes are forced. And Sreelekha is wasted.
