The Stand-up Stars Of Men Are From Bars Let It Rip! Pictures: Anindya Shankar Ray Published 16.07.14, 12:00 AM

SINGLETON STORY: Kunal Rao

Single and flitting through relationships, Kunal spelt out the ups and downs of being unmarried. Think space issues (because plump girlfriends need more space, silly) and dealing with a woman’s weapons (emotional blackmail and boobs, silly). Kunal and his two comic comrades also picked and projected on stage “real” matrimonial ads before deciphering illustrated positions from Kamasutra, which was tagged as the “greatest self-help book”!

BALD & BOLD: Sorabh Pant

The Mumbai-based stand-up comic introduced himself as “Vinod Kambli’s gay cousin” (see the resemblance there?) and that was enough to set the laughter ball rolling! Married to a Bengali, Sorabh admitted he “hasn’t won an argument since”. With married life as the focal point, Sorabh’s bold and loud act oscillated from sexual innuendos to Indian-isms, politics and puns, and a very visual dose of Nigella Lawson vs Tarla Dalal! Those who were equally bold to bag the front-row seats at the sold-out (yes, not a single seat went empty!) 90-minute show at GD Birla Sabhagar, presented by Masterminds Theatre and partnered by t2, were given special attention. Sorabh also confessed he’d be gay for MS Dhoni and for Hrithik Roshan but thankfully, Pant kept his pants on.

SLO-MO SMASH: Atul Khatri

He’s 46, married for 22 years with children and is the “oldest stand-up English comedian in India”. “The younger ones don’t know if they should call me dude or dad,” said Khatri, in his trademark monotone humour, sporting a grey suit and gold tie. Khatri’s understated humour made him the unanimous winner of the evening at the two consecutive shows at GD Birla Sabhagar and The Calcutta Swimming Club last Saturday. The best part? The section about porn for the 40-plus! We wish we could give some of his one-liners away but our lips are sealed. If you’re in Mumbai over this weekend, catch them at Palladium Mall.
