1.That moment in Baazigar when Kajol’s Priya meets Shah Rukh Khan’s Vicky for the first time on a car racing track. He deliberately loses the race to her dad, but wins her over with a smile and that famous line: “Haar kar jeetne waale ko Baazigar kehte hain.” He winks, she blushes…. Who knew that was the start of the on-screen romance of our times.
2 Two years later came Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge… and love in Bolly was never the same again. As Raj and Simran, SRK and Kajol brought fun and freshness, impishness and intensity to romance. The big moment for us? Raj playing his mandolin in the mustard fields of Punjab even as Simran melts into his arms and they break into Tujhe dekha toh. For a whole generation, Raj and Simran locked in embrace, and lost in their own world, spelt L.O.V.E.
3 Another defining moment of the effortless SRK-Kajol chemistry was the ‘palat’ scene on the bridge in DDLJ. Raj is slowly but surely falling for Simran, but she’s engaged to another. As she walks away from him and towards the bus, he tells himself: “Agar yeh tujhse pyaar karti hai toh woh palat ke dekhegi.” Sure enough, Simran looks back and smiles at him just before she boards the bus. Cue for millions of lovers since then to use ‘palat’ as a mood and measure for love.
4.The Karva Chauth scene on the terrace in DDLJ where Raj and Simran laugh and joke and feed each other after a daylong fast. #Smile&Sniffle
5.That iconic last scene of DDLJ where Simran runs and clutches Raj’s outstretched hand as the train chugs out of the station. For us, this was the triumph of love against all odds.
6.The bench scene in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Rahul and Anjali meet after years and both are a little awkward. He asks her why she didn’t keep in touch all these years. “Ghar badal diya tha,” she tells him. “Rishte bhi badal diye thhe kya?” he asks. The two smile awkwardly and exchange half-sentences and say they don’t believe in luck anymore… but when they spot a shooting star, they both turn away from each other and make a wish. “A scene becomes special for the people in it. The bench scene in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai …. we had no idea it would become so big,” SRK told us on the sets of Dilwale.
7 .The dance of passion in Kuch Kuch…. As it pours outside, he goes down on his knees and asks her to dance. When she says ‘No music’, he imitates playing a piano and they close dance… getting closer with every move. She runs her fingers across his cheek, her eyes react whenever he touches her. She in a sheer red sari, he in a black shirt. The rain outside, the passion within. #Intensity
8.Staying with Kuch Kuch…. Rahul meeting Anjali in her room before she goes down to marry Aman. He uses dumb charades — hand on the heart — to tell her he loves her. They don’t say anything, but their teary eyes speak a million words.
9.That moment in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham when Rahul (yes, again!) sees Anjali (yes, again!) for the first time. His eyes are fixed on her as she dances with abandon on the streets of Chandni Chowk. He misses a step, runs into a man walking on the road… but can’t take his eyes off her. It’s love at first dance.
10. “Kuch rishton ke koi naam nahin hote hain… sirf ehsaas hota hai. Aise rishte jo pyaar aur mohabbat ke rishte hote hain,” Rahul tells Anjali in Kabhi Khushi… as he slips a stack of bangles on her wrist. Dumbstruck for once, she tries to break free, but he pulls her closer and kisses her on the back of her head. And then Suraj hua maddham — they turning it on in the sun-kissed deserts of Egypt — happens. #Neverhotter
11.The scene where Mandira proposes to “Khan” in My Name Is Khan. He knocks on her door at dawn, drags her down the road in her pyjamas and bedroom slippers and tells her to close her eyes. When she opens them, it’s just in time to see the morning sun hit the skyscrapers hidden under dense fog. She smiles at him and says: “Khan, marry me”. And he hides his face in his hands and laughs like a kid.
12.Tere naina in My Name Is Khan. The song that shows love blossoming between Mandira and Khan, as he follows her everywhere with his handycam. We loved? On a diet, she reaches out for a chocolate, but then sees him looking at her while getting his hair done in the parlour. As she looks at him guilty, he blows his cheeks out to show how she will look when she gets fat. And she keeps the chocolate away. #Sweet
13.In Kuch Kuch... Anjali poses at the summer camp with Rahul’s daughter Anjali, but the photographer (played by Johny Lever) says something’s missing. Till Rahul slips into the frame and everything becomes “picture perfect”.
14.The scene in DDLJ where Raj tell Simran that they had sex at night, even pointing to the “lipstick mark” on his chest. When she panics and breaks down, he holds her close and says he was only joking: “Main ek Hindustani hoon aur mujhe pataa hai ki ek Hindustani ladki ki izzat kya hoti hai.”
15. The scene in DDLJ where Raj and Simran are saying goodbye at the London train station and she asks for his address so that she can mail him the wedding card. He says he won’t come for her wedding, a shadow of heartbreak creeping into his eyes, a lump forming in his throat.
16. In Karan Arjun, he tries to show her how to use a slingshot, taking a chance every now and then to rest his chin on her bare shoulder. And then, their eyes meet. #Justdoit
17. Her special appearances in his songs — from the fun Maahi ve in Kal Ho Naa Ho to the searing intensity in Om Shanti Om’s Deewangi deewangi. We can’t look at anyone else when these two are doing their thing.
18In Kuch Kuch… Rahul runs into the summer camp in Shimla. “Anjali” he shouts, at the door, his eyes searching for daughter Anjali but finding Kajol’s Anjali. After ages. They stare into each other’s eyes and start moving closer. A stunned smile becomes an awkward laugh as they try to recreate their youthful game of palm-slap, fist-bump, nose-tap... “Sari” is the only word he can utter, seeing tomboy Anjali transformed into lady Anjali. They try to move away but almost bump into each other.... #Awwww
19 .Gerua from Dilwale: Even in a song marred by VFX, their chemistry shines through, at the top of a hill or on the black beaches of Iceland. The moment we loved best? When he sneaks up from behind and hugs her and they stare into each other’s eyes. Hot, hot chemistry in the biting cold.
20.Janam janam from Dilwale: They slow dance in the rain and romance in Bulgaria. She peeps out of a bus window to look at him, he runs after a train to say goodbye to her. She looks striking, he sexy in a beard.
21.The Dilwale video offering a sneak peek at their romance... from long walks hand in hand on the cobbled streets of Bulgaria to close-dancing at a party... and then the romance after a break — intense and edgy and fraught with a certain tension. Making us desperate to catch SRK-Kajol 2015.
22. Can’t wait to watch Dilwale this weekend? t2 recommends the ‘bench’ scene in Bulgaria. SRK’s Raj is speeding down a busy street when he knocks down Kajol’s Meera who is crossing the road. Despite the fact that he’s chasing someone, he steps out of the car, helps her up, gathers her belongings and ensures she’s okay…his eyes not leaving hers even for a moment. Vintage SRK-Kajol moment.#Evergreen #Goosebumps
